A day trip from La Spezia to Florence works, but it is a long day: the regional train takes about two and a half hours each way with a change at Pisa, so you leave early in the morning and get home late in the evening. In return you get about nine hours in Florence, enough for a full walk from Ponte Vecchio to Piazzale Michelangelo with short visits inside the main museums.

Is a day trip from La Spezia to Florence worth it?

Florence gives you what the Ligurian coast cannot: Renaissance palaces, the cathedral square, the Uffizi and Michelangelo's David at the Galleria dell'Accademia, all within one walkable centre. The price is travel time. With the change at Pisa, close to five hours of the day go to trains, and the morning direct trains are too early or too late to help.

What makes the day work is the early start. Leave La Spezia shortly after half past seven and you stand on Ponte Vecchio by half past ten, with about nine hours in Florence before you head back. That is enough for a complete walk across both banks of the Arno with short stops inside the big museums, but not for a slow afternoon in one gallery. If you want depth, pick the one collection you care about most and see the others from outside.

Who this day trip suits

  • First-time visitors to Italy who may not get back to Florence soon and want to see it at least once
  • Art lovers who are happy with focused, shorter museum visits instead of whole afternoons in one gallery
  • Early risers who do not mind a train shortly after half past seven and arriving home around eleven at night
  • Travellers based in La Spezia who have no other base in Tuscany for Florence on this trip

Go if you have one chance to see Florence and accept an early start and a late train home; if you want a slower day or travel with small children, choose Pisa instead.

How to get from La Spezia to Florence by regional train

The best way is Trenitalia's regional train from La Spezia Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, with a change at Pisa Centrale in the morning, because it brings you into the heart of the city in under three hours. FlixBus also runs a couple of buses a day, but they stop at Villa Costanza on the edge of Florence, where you still need the tram into the centre.

Train: Trenitalia

Direct regional trains between La Spezia Centrale and Firenze Santa Maria Novella exist, but in the morning there is only one, well before dawn; the others leave from early afternoon, too late for a day trip. The practical way is a regional train to Pisa Centrale and then one of the Pisa to Florence regionals, which run several times an hour, for a journey of about two and a half hours including the change. One through ticket per direction covers both trains, but the connection is not guaranteed and the second train does not wait for a late first one, so leave a comfortable change. Buy the ticket at the station machines or online and stamp paper regional tickets in the green validators before boarding. In the evening, some trains on the Pisa to La Spezia section are reserved services; if your return uses one, buy it with its seat reservation. The fare is shown in the cost tool.

Your La Spezia to Florence day trip itinerary

Day plan for: Tue–Wed, Fri–Sat

The early train via Pisa anchors the day: it puts you in Florence just after ten, the walking tour fills the hours until early evening, and an evening connection via Pisa brings you home.

  1. Morning07:40 – 10:01

Take a regional shortly before eight from La Spezia Centrale to Pisa Centrale, change there for Florence and arrive at Firenze Santa Maria Novella shortly after ten. Walk through the centre to Ponte Vecchio.

There is no useful direct train in the morning, and this connection gets you to Florence just after ten with a change of about twenty minutes at Pisa.

  2. Tour10:30 – 13:00

Open the tour in the browser at Ponte Vecchio. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells the story of the bridge and leads you across the Arno to Palazzo Pitti and on into the Boboli Gardens, then back over the river to Palazzo Strozzi.

The Oltrarno palace and gardens take time and energy, so they come first while you are fresh.

  3. Lunch13:00 – 14:00

Break for lunch after Palazzo Strozzi, before you walk on to the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. Eat a couple of streets away from Ponte Vecchio and the Duomo, where food is better and cheaper.

The walk from the Boboli Gardens to Palazzo Strozzi is the longest leg of the morning, and Mercato Centrale follows soon after Santa Maria Novella if you want a snack or coffee later.

  4. Afternoon14:00 – 19:30

The guide continues with the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, Mercato Centrale and the Galleria dell'Accademia, then the Florence Cathedral and Piazza del Duomo from outside, Piazza della Signoria, Palazzo Vecchio, the Loggia dei Lanzi and the Uffizi Gallery. You pass the Basilica of Santa Croce from outside and finish at Piazzale Michelangelo around seven in the evening.

About half an hour of slack remains before you have to leave, so you can linger a little longer in one museum or at the viewpoint. The last leg climbs to Piazzale Michelangelo; buses 12 and 13 also go up if your legs are tired.

  5. Return19:30 – 23:00

Leave Piazzale Michelangelo by half past seven and head to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, about 40 minutes on foot plus a 15 minute buffer. Take a train just before half past eight to Pisa Centrale, change there and arrive at La Spezia Centrale around eleven at night.

This is one timed example connection with a short change at Pisa that is not guaranteed, so look up the times for your travel date before you set off.

Arrival to return departure: 10 h 27 min. Time for your visit: about 9 h.

Arrival 10:01, tour start 10:30: 20 min to walk to the start, 9 min spare.

Realistically you get about nine hours in Florence; if you arrive late, cut from the end of the tour, first Santa Croce and Piazzale Michelangelo, never the order of the stops before them.

Florence walking tour in one day: from Ponte Vecchio to Piazzale Michelangelo

The walking tour is how you actually see Florence on this day: it starts at Ponte Vecchio, loops through Oltrarno and the historic centre and ends on the hill at Piazzale Michelangelo, about 9.8 km and a little over two hours of pure walking spread across the day. The AI Tour Guide leads the walk as a conversation, telling the stories of each place and adapting to what interests you, while the map navigation takes you from stop to stop.

What a La Spezia to Florence day trip costs

Three things drive the price of this day: the regional train ticket each way via Pisa, the paid entrances and food. The cost tool starts with the seven museums and churches the plan visits inside, from Palazzo Pitti to the Uffizi; drop the ones you would rather see from outside and the total falls quickly.

Getting back from Florence to La Spezia

Direct trains from Florence to La Spezia stop running in the afternoon, so the evening way home goes via Pisa: a regional train to Pisa Centrale, a short change, then on to La Spezia Centrale. One through ticket covers both trains, but the second train does not wait for a late first one.

From Piazzale Michelangelo it is a walk back down and across the centre to Firenze Santa Maria Novella. Leave yourself the walk plus a quarter of an hour at the station, because a missed first train usually means a missed change at Pisa.

If you run late, drop Santa Croce and Piazzale Michelangelo first and walk straight to the station from the Uffizi. Trains from Florence to Pisa run often into the late evening, but there is no confirmed later connection on to La Spezia, so if you miss the planned train look up the next Pisa to La Spezia departure before you board, and be ready to stay the night in Florence or Pisa if none fits.

Questions about the day trip from La Spezia to Florence

Can you see both the Uffizi and the Accademia on this day trip?

The plan includes both, but as short visits fitted between the other stops. Book timed tickets for both ahead, the Accademia especially, as same-day entry is rarely possible. If you want real time with one collection, choose it and see the other from outside.

What should I wear for the churches?

Shoulders and knees must be covered to enter churches such as Santa Maria Novella, so pack a light scarf or wear long trousers or a skirt on this day.

Do I need to stamp my train ticket?

Yes, paper regional tickets must be validated in the green machines on the platform before you board in La Spezia. Inspectors do fine travellers with unstamped tickets.

Is this day trip a good idea with young children?

It is hard on small children: close to five hours on trains plus close to ten kilometres of walking. Pisa gives families a similar taste of Tuscany with much less travel.

Can I stop in Pisa on the way, since the train changes there?

Not on this plan. The change at Pisa Centrale is too short to reach Piazza dei Miracoli and back, and the Florence day has no spare hour. Pisa works better as its own day trip from La Spezia.
