Capri works well as a day trip from Naples: you sail early in the morning and come back on a boat in the early evening. The NLG hydrofoil takes about fifty minutes each way, and in return you get about seven and a half hours on the island, enough for the full walking tour and an unhurried afternoon.

Is a day trip from Naples to Capri worth it?

Yes, if the sea is calm and the sky is clear. Capri is reachable only by boat, and the crossing is short enough that you can leave Naples after breakfast and still be on the quay at Marina Grande before the island gets busy. What you get is the opposite of Naples: no cars for visitors in season, small lanes, gardens above the sea, the Faraglioni rocks and a coastline you walk rather than drive.

The price of the day is time and money. You start early and return late, the island is expensive to eat on, and the heaviest crowds move through Capri town from late morning to mid afternoon. On a grey or stormy day the views disappear, boat trips get cancelled and the Blue Grotto stays shut, so on a bad forecast the trip loses most of its point.

The plan here answers both problems: the early ferry puts you ahead of the midday crowds in the Piazzetta and the Gardens of Augustus, and the walk then leads you away from the busiest streets towards Tragara, the Faraglioni and the Natural Arch on the quieter side of the island.

Who this day trip suits

  • First visitors to the Bay of Naples who want to see the island everyone talks about, in one well-planned day.
  • Walkers: the tour covers several kilometres on foot along lanes and viewpoints, which is how Capri is best seen.
  • Travellers who like gardens and coastal scenery more than museums, with one historic monastery on the way.
  • Visitors in spring or early autumn, when the island is comfortable and less crowded.
  • Early risers who are happy to catch a morning ferry in exchange for a full day on the island.

Go to Capri if you can start early, the forecast is good and you want to spend the day on foot by the sea; if the weather is poor or you want a quieter island, take Ischia or Sorrento instead.

How to get from Naples to Capri by ferry

The recommended way is the NLG hydrofoil from Napoli Beverello, because its early morning sailing lands you on Capri before nine and its early evening boat back leaves room for the whole walking tour. Caremar from Napoli Porta di Massa is the alternative with the latest return of the day, and SNAV also runs this crossing from Molo Beverello.

Ferry: NLG

NLG sails from Molo Beverello, the main ferry pier in front of Castel Nuovo, straight to Marina Grande on Capri in about fifty minutes. In the cooler months there are only a couple of departures a day each way: one early in the morning and one in the late morning out of Naples, and one in the afternoon and one in the early evening back from Capri. Buy online or at the port ticket office; for a day trip it is wise to book ahead, especially the return, since the later boats sell out first. Check in at least 20 minutes before departure. The compulsory Capri landing contribution is already added to the fare.

Ferry: Caremar

Caremar leaves from Calata Porta di Massa, a separate pier a short walk east of Molo Beverello, so make sure you head to the right one. The crossing takes about an hour on the faster boat and longer on the conventional ferry, and there are a few sailings a day each way: the morning boat out leaves a little later than NLG's, and the last boat back in the evening is the latest return of the day. Caremar runs both a conventional ferry and a faster boat with different fares, and tickets can be bought online. As with every operator, the Capri landing contribution is included in the ticket. The fare for each option is in the cost tool.

The tour starts right on the quay at Marina Grande, a few minutes from where the ferry docks. The funicular up to the Piazzetta and the island buses leave from next to the port; the walk takes you up on foot instead, and the funicular and buses come in handy later for a detour to Anacapri or for the way back down.

Naples to Capri day trip itinerary, hour by hour

Day plan for: Tue–Sun

The day hangs on two NLG sailings: the one just after eight out of Naples and the one shortly after six in the evening back, with the whole walking tour fitted into the morning and early afternoon in between.

  1. Morning08:05 – 08:55

Take the NLG ferry from Napoli Beverello just after eight and arrive in Capri shortly before nine. Step off at Marina Grande and walk the few minutes along the quay to the first stop of the tour.

The next NLG boat from Naples leaves in the late morning, which would cut your day short; the early boat also gets you to the funicular and the Piazzetta before the midday queues.

  2. Tour09:45 – 13:15

Open the tour in your browser at Marina Grande shortly before ten. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells you the stories of the harbour and asks what you are curious about, then leads you up to the Piazzetta around a quarter past ten, into the Gardens of Augustus towards eleven, to Via Krupp after eleven and Belvedere Cannone towards noon, and finally to the Charterhouse of San Giacomo soon after noon, where you have about an hour inside.

Capri town is at its busiest from late morning, so the Piazzetta and the Gardens of Augustus come first, and the visit to the Charterhouse fits comfortably before lunch.

  3. Lunch13:15 – 14:15

Lunch after the Charterhouse of San Giacomo and before Belvedere di Tragara, in Capri town. Skip the restaurants right on the Piazzetta and look for a place such as Verginiello for island cooking: ravioli capresi, a caprese salad, torta caprese to finish.

Many kitchens on Capri close after lunch hours, so eating around one is the safe choice, and the break comes before the longer walk out to the south side of the island.

  4. Afternoon14:15 – 17:00

The guide continues to Belvedere di Tragara after two, down to the Faraglioni around half past two and along the path to the Natural Arch, the last stop, around a quarter past three. After that you have about an hour and a half before you need to head back, enough for an unhurried end to the afternoon.

The quiet south side is best after lunch when the crowds stay in town, and the free hours at the end leave room for one extra without risking the boat home.

    2. Faraglioni in Capri, stop 8 on the self-guided walking tour8Faraglioni
    3. Natural Arch in Capri, stop 9 on the self-guided walking tour9Natural Arch
  5. Return17:00 – 19:00

Walk back from the Natural Arch towards Capri town and down to Marina Grande by funicular, bus or on foot, and board the NLG ferry shortly after six, arriving at Napoli Beverello around seven.

The way down and the wait at the port take about an hour with a buffer, so leaving the Natural Arch by around five keeps you safe. If you miss the boat, the last Caremar sailing of the day leaves shortly after eight for Napoli Porta di Massa.

Arrival to return departure: 9 h 15 min. Time for your visit: about 7.5 h.

Realistically you get about seven and a half hours on Capri; if your ferry is late or the morning starts slowly, shorten the end of the tour at the Natural Arch rather than changing its order.

Capri walking tour in one day: from the harbour to the Natural Arch

The walking tour is how you see Capri on this day: nine stops from the ferry quay at Marina Grande up through Capri town, out along the south side to the Faraglioni and on to the Natural Arch. It is about 5.7 km and roughly 104 minutes of pure walking, around four and a half hours with time at the stops, on lanes, garden paths and coastal footpaths. The AI Tour Guide leads the whole walk as a conversation, so you hear the stories of each place while you walk.

Naples to Capri day trip cost

The two ferry crossings are the biggest part of the bill, with the compulsory Capri landing contribution already included in the ticket out; the Gardens of Augustus and the Charterhouse of San Giacomo are the two paid stops on the tour, while everything else along the walk is free. Food is the cost you control most: Capri is expensive in the tourist centre, and lunch away from the Piazzetta saves a good share.

Getting back from Capri to Naples

All boats back leave from Marina Grande, so the last part of the day is getting down from the Natural Arch through Capri town to the port. You can walk down or take the funicular or a bus from town, but in busy periods the queues for both can be long, so allow about an hour from the Natural Arch to the boat, buffer included.

The NLG boat in the early evening lands at Molo Beverello, the same pier you left from in the morning; book that return in advance, because the later boats fill first. The later Caremar evening ferry lands instead at Napoli Porta di Massa, a short walk east of Molo Beverello.

If you are running late, drop the walk out to the Natural Arch first and head down to Marina Grande from Capri town; there is no confirmed later connection after the evening Caremar ferry, so missing it means staying the night on the island.

Questions about the day trip from Naples to Capri

Can I take my car to Capri?

No. Visitors' cars are banned on Capri for most of the year, and the island is small enough to explore on foot, by funicular and by bus. Leave the car in Naples and take the ferry as a foot passenger.

Is it worth going to Capri if it rains?

Usually not. In bad weather the views disappear, boat tours are cancelled and the Blue Grotto closes. If the forecast is poor, move the trip to another day or choose Sorrento, which you can also reach by train.

Can I add the Blue Grotto to this plan?

Only with difficulty. The Blue Grotto depends on calm seas and in the cooler months opens only in the morning, when the tour is in Capri town. It is an optional extra, not part of the walk, and needs a separate boat trip.

Is the day suitable for children?

Yes, for children who enjoy walking: the tour is several kilometres on foot. Under 18s enter the Charterhouse of San Giacomo free, and under 12s enter the Gardens of Augustus free.

Should I book the ferry in advance?

Advance booking is not compulsory, but for a day trip it is recommended, above all for the way back, since the later boats sell out first.
