Modena is an easy day trip from Bologna: direct regional trains take under half an hour, and you get about six hours in town. Take a mid-morning train, walk the old centre from the Galleria Estense past the Ghirlandina and the cathedral to the market, the synagogue and the Ducal Gardens, and be back in Bologna in the early evening.

Is a day trip from Bologna to Modena worth it?

Yes, and the main reason is how little effort it takes. Modena lies straight west of Bologna along the old Via Emilia, direct regional trains run all day, and regional tickets need no advance booking. The old centre is compact and flat, so once you arrive almost everything on the walk is a few minutes apart.

What Modena gives you that Bologna does not is a quieter, more polished pace and two very different pulls: food culture, from traditional balsamic vinegar to gnocco fritto and Lambrusco, and the world of fast cars around Enzo Ferrari. Piazza Grande, the cathedral and the Ghirlandina form the town's core, and the covered Mercato Albinelli feels smaller and more local than Bologna's Quadrilatero.

The cost in travel time is small: under an hour on the train for the whole day. The only real limit is the calendar, because the Galleria Estense closes on Mondays.

Who this day trip suits

  • Food lovers: the Mercato Albinelli, real aged balsamic vinegar, tortelloni and gnocco fritto are the heart of the town.
  • Car fans: the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari sits at the end of the walk as an optional finale.
  • First-time visitors to Emilia-Romagna who want a short, simple train ride and a full day without rushing.
  • Travellers who find Bologna busy and want a calmer town with a slower pace for a day.
  • Art lovers curious about the d'Este court, whose collection fills the Galleria Estense.

Go if you care about food, cars or simply a calm Italian town close to Bologna; if neither food nor cars interest you, Ferrara or Ravenna will give you more for the day.

How to get from Bologna to Modena by train

The direct regional train run by Trenitalia and Tper from Bologna Centrale is the way to go: it is quick, frequent and needs no reservation. FlixBus also runs a bus between the two towns, but only once or twice a day in the afternoon and taking about twice as long, so it does not suit a day trip.

Train: Trenitalia Regionale

Regional and Regionale Veloce trains leave Bologna Centrale for Modena throughout the day and take between twenty and thirty minutes. In the morning there is a direct train roughly every half hour, then a gap around midday, so aim for a morning departure rather than a late start. Buy your ticket through Trenitalia before boarding, and make sure it is for a regional or Regionale Veloce train: high-speed Frecce on the same line need a reserved ticket bound to one train. The fare is shown in the cost tool.

Bologna to Modena day trip itinerary

Day plan for: Tue–Sun

The day hangs on the mid-morning train out and the train back around five, with the walking tour in between and lunch near Piazza Grande.

  1. Morning09:33 – 09:58

Take the direct regional train at about half past nine from Bologna Centrale, arrive in Modena just before ten and walk into the centre to the Galleria Estense.

A mid-morning start avoids the commuter rush and still gives you a full day; earlier direct trains leave about every half hour if you prefer to start sooner.

  2. Tour10:30 – 13:00

Open the tour in your browser at the Galleria Estense. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells the story of the d'Este court and its collection, asks what catches your eye, and around a quarter to twelve leads you on to the Ghirlandina Tower for the climb.

Both paid stops come first while you have the most energy, and the gallery and tower take the longest of the whole walk.

  3. Lunch13:00 – 14:00

Lunch after the Ghirlandina Tower and before Modena Cathedral, in the lanes around Piazza Grande. Look for tortelloni, gnocco fritto or tigelle with a glass of Lambrusco; Trattoria Aldina faces the market entrance, and Ristretto Vicolo Coccapani needs a reservation.

The tower and the cathedral stand side by side, so lunch fits naturally between them, and on a Tuesday the cathedral is open through the afternoon.

  4. Afternoon14:00 – 16:30

The guide picks up again at Modena Cathedral, then Piazza Grande, the Mercato Albinelli and the Modena Synagogue, the last three seen from outside, and ends the planned walk in the Ducal Gardens. If you want more, the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari closes the tour as an optional detour; that means skipping the planned train and taking a later one.

These stops are minutes apart, and on weekdays the market stalls have wound down by mid-afternoon, so the building is part of the walk rather than a shopping stop.

    5. Ducal Gardens in Modena, stop 7 on the self-guided walking tour7Ducal Gardens
  5. Return16:30 – 17:25

Leave the Ducal Gardens by half past four, walk about ten minutes to the station with a quarter hour to spare and take the direct train just before five, arriving at Bologna Centrale around half past five.

After the early-evening trains there is a gap of almost two hours, so catching this one keeps your evening in Bologna free.

Arrival to return departure: 7 h. Time for your visit: about 6 h.

Arrival 09:58, tour start 10:30: 20 min to walk to the start, 12 min spare.

That gives you about six hours in Modena; if you arrive later, keep the tour order and shorten the end, letting the Ducal Gardens go first, then the synagogue.

The walk runs one way from the Galleria Estense to the Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari, about 2.5 km and roughly half an hour of pure walking through a flat, compact old town, with the stops doing most of the work. The AI Tour Guide leads it as a conversation, from the d'Este collections to the cathedral square and the market, and the Ferrari museum at the end is an optional finale if you have time.

Bologna to Modena day trip cost

The day is cheap to get to: two short regional train rides, plus entry to the two paid stops in the plan, the Galleria Estense and the Ghirlandina Tower. The rest is food, and Modena's street food and market snacks keep lunch modest if you skip the sit-down restaurants.

Getting back from Modena to Bologna

The way back is the same direct regional line in reverse, under half an hour to Bologna Centrale. From the Ducal Gardens the station is about ten minutes on foot; keep a quarter hour of buffer to buy your ticket and find the platform.

If you want dinner in Modena, there is no need to hurry: direct trains keep running into the late evening every day, including Sunday, though there is a gap of almost two hours after the early-evening departures.

If you run late, skip the optional Ferrari museum and drop the Ducal Gardens first, then keep the market and synagogue brief; if you miss the planned train, simply take one of the later direct trains, which run until late evening.

Questions about the day trip from Bologna to Modena

Can I visit the Ferrari museum in Maranello on the same day?

Maranello is a separate site about 18 km south of Modena and needs a shuttle bus or a car, so it does not fit on top of this plan. The Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari at the end of the walk is the realistic choice on a one-day trip.

Can I combine Modena and Parma in one day?

It is technically possible but rushed, and both towns have enough for a full day each. Give Parma its own day from Bologna.

Where can I taste real balsamic vinegar?

Market stalls in and around the Mercato Albinelli sell aged balsamic, and Balsamico e Cucina, the restaurant of the Monari Federzoni producer, cooks with it. Traditional balsamic tastes nothing like the supermarket kind, more like a thick syrup. A visit to an acetaia needs a second day.

Can I eat at Osteria Francescana on a day trip?

Only with planning: tables open exactly three months ahead and go fast. Franceschetta58, Massimo Bottura's bistro, is the more realistic option for a day trip.
