Milan is an easy day trip from Como: direct regional trains take about an hour, run all day and need no reservation. Leave Como in the morning and you get close to nine hours in the city, enough to walk from the cathedral square past La Scala and Brera to Sforza Castle, Santa Maria delle Grazie and Sant'Ambrogio before an evening train home.

Is a day trip from Como to Milan worth it?

Como gives you the lake, the old town and the boats. Milan gives you what a lakeside town cannot: a cathedral square at the centre of a major city, the opera house of La Scala, the paintings of the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, a castle with courtyards you can walk through, and the early Christian basilica of Sant'Ambrogio. On one walk you move from the Gothic cathedral to a Napoleonic triumphal arch and back to the medieval merchants' square.

The journey costs you little. Trains between Como and Milan run from early morning to late evening, the ride takes roughly an hour on the Trenord line and around forty minutes on the faster trains to Milano Centrale, and regional tickets need no booking. Most people do this route the other way round, from Milan to the lake, which makes the morning trains out of Como a calm way into the city.

The real limit is choice, not time. The walk covers about seven kilometres and four paid insides, from the cathedral to three collections, so pick the insides that matter to you and see the rest from the street.

Who this day trip suits

  • Art lovers based on Lake Como, because Brera and the Ambrosiana hold paintings no lakeside town can match
  • Opera and music fans who want to stand inside La Scala at least once
  • First visitors to Lombardy staying in Como who want the region's capital without moving hotels
  • Travellers without a car, since direct trains cover the whole day and no reservation is needed on regional services
  • Anyone who has seen Como's lakefront and wants a city day with architecture from Romanesque to Napoleonic

Go to Milan if you want art, opera and a great city square within an hour of the lake; choose Bergamo if you prefer a smaller historic town and do not mind a longer ride.

How to get from Como to Milan by train

Trenord regional trains are the way to go: they leave Como from two stations, run all day and need no seat reservation. FlixBus also runs a few buses from Como to Milan's Lampugnano bus station, but the train drops you much closer to the centre.

Train: Trenord

From Como Lago, the small station close to the lakefront, Trenord trains run on the Saronno line to Milano Cadorna in about an hour. On weekdays there is a train roughly every half hour, fewer on Saturdays and fewer again on Sundays. Trenord also runs a frequent service from Como S.Giovanni to Milano Porta Garibaldi in about the same time, which is the morning train in the day plan. Buy your ticket online, at the station machines or the ticket office; if it is a paper ticket, validate it at the platform machine before you board.

Another service: EuroCity

From Como S.Giovanni, the main station on the line to Switzerland, direct trains reach Milano Centrale in about forty minutes. Trenord regional trains run roughly hourly through the day, and Trenitalia and EuroCity trains fill the gaps. Regional trains need no reservation, but EuroCity trains are reserved products, so check which train you board. On the departure board, look for your departure time rather than the final destination, because many trains continue beyond Milan.

From Milano Porta Garibaldi it is about three quarters of an hour on foot to the cathedral square, where the walk begins; from Milano Centrale or Cadorna the metro or a tram gets you there faster. Leave enough time from the platform so the tour does not start in a rush.

Como to Milan day trip itinerary: one day from morning to evening

Day plan for: Tue, Thu–Sun

Take a morning train out of Como, start the walk at the cathedral around a quarter past ten, and let the cathedral, the three paid collections and the castle shape the day before an evening train home.

  1. Morning08:20 – 09:21

Take the Trenord train from Como S.Giovanni shortly after eight, arriving at Milano Porta Garibaldi about an hour later. Walk into the centre to the cathedral square, about three quarters of an hour.

This train gets you into Milan early enough to see the cathedral, La Scala and Brera before lunch, while the transfer still leaves time for a coffee near the Duomo.

  2. Tour10:15 – 13:15

Around a quarter past ten open the tour in the browser in front of Milan Cathedral. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells the story of the cathedral before you go inside, asks what you want to know and then walks you through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II to La Scala Theatre, then on to the Pinacoteca di Brera.

The cathedral is the first long inside visit of the day, the Galleria is seen in passing, and the rest of the morning goes into the two insides that reward it: La Scala and the Brera paintings.

  3. Lunch13:15 – 14:15

Have lunch after the Pinacoteca di Brera and before Sforza Castle, in the streets of the Brera quarter on the way to the castle.

Brera is the longest visit of the morning, and the castle courtyards are open all day, so the break falls naturally between the two.

  4. Afternoon14:15 – 18:30

The guide picks up at Sforza Castle around a quarter past two, continues to the Arch of Peace, then to Santa Maria delle Grazie around half past three, Basilica di Sant'Ambrogio, the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana and finally Piazza dei Mercanti around half past five. Optional detour: Leonardo's Last Supper in the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano beside Santa Maria delle Grazie is not part of the tour and needs its own ticket; it uses most of the spare time at the end of the day.

Santa Maria delle Grazie has reopened after its midday break by the time you reach it around half past three, and Sant'Ambrogio is open again by the time you arrive.

  5. Return18:30 – 20:23

Leave Piazza dei Mercanti by about half past six, walk or take the metro to Milano Centrale and board the Trenord train shortly before eight, arriving at Como S.Giovanni just before half past eight.

The tour ends around a quarter to six, which leaves about three quarters of an hour for an aperitivo near the Duomo before the transfer to the station with a short buffer.

Arrival to return departure: 10 h 22 min. Time for your visit: about 8.5 h.

Arrival 09:21, tour start 10:15: 45 min to walk to the start, 9 min spare.

Count on close to nine hours in Milan; if you arrive late, cut the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana visit and Piazza dei Mercanti at the end of the walk rather than rushing the morning.

At the cathedral square the AI Tour Guide greets you and leads the walk as a conversation, from the Galleria and La Scala to the paintings of Brera and the courtyards of Sforza Castle. It tells the stories behind each place, asks what you want to hear more about and remembers it, so by Sant'Ambrogio it knows whether you came for opera, art or the Sforza dukes. Como to Milan day trip cost

The train tickets are the smaller part of this day; what moves the total is how many paid insides you choose and where you eat. The cost tool starts with Milan Cathedral, La Scala, the Pinacoteca di Brera and the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, the four insides that fit the plan, while the Galleria, the Arch of Peace and Piazza dei Mercanti cost nothing from outside.

Getting back from Milan to Como

The easiest way home is from Milano Centrale, where Trenord trains to Como S.Giovanni leave roughly every hour into the late evening and take about forty minutes. If you prefer the lakefront end of Como, Trenord trains from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago run about every half hour on weekdays, and trains from Milano Porta Garibaldi to Como S.Giovanni run all evening as well.

From Piazza dei Mercanti allow about fifty minutes on foot to the platform, less by metro, plus a quarter of an hour of buffer, and validate a paper ticket before boarding.

If you run late, drop the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana visit first and see Piazza dei Mercanti in passing; if you miss your train, take the next one, since trains to Como S.Giovanni from Milano Centrale and Porta Garibaldi and to Como Lago from Cadorna keep running until late in the evening.

Questions about the day trip from Como to Milan

Which station in Como should I leave from?

Como S.Giovanni has the fastest trains to Milano Centrale and the Trenord service to Porta Garibaldi; Como Lago is closer to the lakefront and has trains to Milano Cadorna. Both work for this day, so pick the one nearer your hotel.

Do I need to book the train in advance?

No, regional Trenord trains need no reservation, so you can buy on the day online, at a machine or at the ticket office. Only EuroCity trains between Como S.Giovanni and Milano Centrale are reserved products.

Can I see Leonardo's Last Supper on this day trip?

Yes, as an optional detour at Santa Maria delle Grazie. It is a separate paid visit in the Museo del Cenacolo Vinciano, closed on Mondays, and it uses most of the spare time the plan leaves at the end of the day.

How much walking is the Milan tour?

About seven kilometres in total on city streets, with long breaks inside the galleries and at lunch. Comfortable shoes make the afternoon between the castle and Sant'Ambrogio much easier.

Do I have to validate my train ticket?

Paper tickets must be validated at the machines on the platform before boarding; digital tickets do not.
