Rome works as a day trip from Florence: the high-speed train takes about an hour and a half, so you can be at the Vatican Museums by late morning and still have about eight hours in the city. It is a full day, and Rome is far too big for one, but a clear route from the Vatican to the Colosseum gives you the classic sights in the right order and gets you back to Florence for a late dinner.

Is a day trip from Florence to Rome worth it?

The rail link makes this trip possible. Italo and Trenitalia both run fast direct trains between Firenze Santa Maria Novella and Rome, and with about an hour and a half each way the journey costs you less of the day than many smaller Tuscan towns do. Leave early and you arrive in Rome while the Vatican Museums are still in their first hours.

What Rome gives you is a different scale of history: the papal collections and St. Peter's Basilica, Hadrian's tomb turned fortress, a temple to all the gods still standing, and the Forum and Colosseum where ancient Rome had its centre. Florence is the Renaissance; Rome adds the Vatican and two thousand years of ruins on top.

The price is a long, dense day. You walk around ten kilometres, the morning goes to two big interiors, and the Roman Forum and Colosseum are seen from outside at the end of the walk. If you want to go inside the ancient sites at leisure, Rome deserves its own overnight stay.

Who this day trip suits

  • First-time visitors to Italy based in Florence who want to see Rome at least once without moving hotels
  • Travellers short on days who are happy with a full, fast-paced sightseeing day
  • Art and church lovers for whom the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica are the main reason to go
  • Good walkers who like to cover a whole city on foot, from the Vatican across the Tiber to the Colosseum

Go if you want Rome's classic sights in one well-planned day and do not mind a long walk; pick Bologna, Pisa or Siena if you prefer a calmer day, and give Rome an overnight stay if you want to go inside the Colosseum and the Forum.

How to get from Florence to Rome by train

Take a direct high-speed train with Italo or Trenitalia: it is the fastest and simplest way, with frequent departures from Firenze Santa Maria Novella and no change. FlixBus also runs the route, but at over three hours each way it eats too much of a day trip.

Train: Trenitalia

High-speed trains leave Firenze Santa Maria Novella from early morning and run through the day, reaching Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina in about an hour and a half. Italo and Trenitalia sell separate tickets: a ticket from one operator is not valid on the other's train, and their machines at the station are different, so check the name before you buy. Fares are dynamic, so booking online in advance usually pays off, although seats are normally still available at the station on the day. Platforms are often shown only shortly before departure: be at the station about fifteen minutes early, then watch the board. Slow regional trains take far longer and only make sense if you want to stop in a town such as Arezzo or Orvieto on the way.

The early Italo arrives at Roma Tiburtina, on the other side of the city from the Vatican. On foot the crossing to the Vatican Museums, where the tour starts, takes almost two hours, which the day plan allows for; public transport or a taxi gets you there sooner. From the Vatican the free route navigation in the browser takes you from stop to stop.

Florence to Rome day trip itinerary that fits the trains

Day plan for: Mon–Sat

The day hangs on the early train: it puts you at the Vatican Museums around eleven, and the walk then moves steadily east until the Colosseum, close to the evening train back.

  1. Morning07:48 – 09:33

Take the Trenitalia train shortly before eight from Firenze S.M.Novella, arrive at Roma Termini around half past nine and cross the city to the Vatican Museums, quickest by public transport or taxi.

The two biggest visits of the day come first, and arriving at the Vatican by late morning still leaves the whole afternoon for the centre.

  2. Tour10:45 – 13:00

Open the tour in the browser at the Vatican Museums. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells the stories behind the collections, asks what interests you and leads you on to St. Peter's Basilica around noon.

These are the interiors that need the most time and energy, so they get the fresh hours before lunch.

    2. St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour2St. Peter's Basilica

    Start the Rome tour

  3. Lunch13:00 – 14:00

Lunch after St. Peter's Basilica, before the walk along the Tiber to Castel Sant'Angelo.

It splits the two Vatican visits from the rest of the day, and the next stretch to Castel Sant'Angelo is one of the longest legs on foot.

  4. Afternoon14:00 – 18:30

The guide picks up at Castel Sant'Angelo around a quarter past two, then leads you across the river to the Spanish Steps around three, seen from the square, and on to the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon around four. From there it is Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Venezia, all seen in passing, and finally the Roman Forum and the Colosseum from outside around a quarter past six.

Castel Sant'Angelo is open daily, Mondays included, so it works as the first visit after lunch; the squares and fountains after it need no ticket and flow into each other on short walks. The plan leaves about half an hour spare, which you can spend longer inside the Pantheon or on a coffee stop.

    9. Colosseum in Rome, stop 11 on the self-guided walking tour11Colosseum
  5. Return18:30 – 20:46

Leave the Colosseum by half past six, walk about twenty-five minutes to Roma Termini, keep a short buffer, and take the Trenitalia train shortly after seven, arriving at Firenze S.M.Novella around a quarter to nine.

The walk to the station is short, and the buffer keeps a crowded street or a late platform announcement from costing you the train.

Arrival to return departure: 9 h 38 min. Time for your visit: about 8 h.

Arrival 09:33, tour start 10:45: 70 min to walk to the start, 2 min spare.

You get about eight hours in Rome; if you arrive late, cut from the end of the walk, the Forum and Colosseum views first, and keep the order of the rest.

Rome walking tour in one day: from the Vatican to the Colosseum

The walk runs one way from the Vatican Museums across the Tiber to the Colosseum, about 10 km and roughly two and a half hours on foot, plus the time at eleven stops. It pairs two great interiors in the morning with squares, fountains and ancient ruins in the afternoon, and the AI Tour Guide leads it as a conversation, so you follow one story through the city instead of hunting for the next sight.

What a Florence to Rome day trip costs

The train there and back is the largest item, and because both operators price dynamically, booking early is where you save most; entrances come next, with the Vatican Museums, Castel Sant'Angelo and the Pantheon preselected in the cost tool and the optional Trevi Fountain access added as you choose. Lunch, water and the transfer across Rome by public transport or taxi come on top.

Getting back from Rome to Florence in the evening

The recommended train back is the Trenitalia train shortly after seven from Roma Termini, arriving at Firenze S.M.Novella around a quarter to nine. Roma Termini is about twenty-five minutes on foot from the Colosseum, so leave the last stop by half past six and you still have a short buffer; the platform usually appears only shortly before departure, so use the spare minutes to find the right board. Keep an eye on your bags at the station and on board, and an earlier evening arrival also spares you the station areas late at night.

If you are running late, drop the end of the walk first: the views of the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, then Piazza Venezia. If you miss that train, switch to a later Trenitalia train from Roma Termini, keeping in mind that there is no later direct connection to fall back on after the last evening trains.

Questions about the day trip from Florence to Rome

Can I go inside the Colosseum and the Roman Forum on this day trip?

Not in this plan: the morning goes to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's Basilica, the afternoon starts at Castel Sant'Angelo, and the walk reaches the Forum and the Colosseum at the end of the day, where you see them from outside. If the ancient sites matter most to you, give Rome an overnight stay.

Should I take a regional train to save money?

For a day trip, no. Regional trains take far longer than the high-speed services and cut your time in Rome sharply; they are worth it only if you want to stop in a town such as Arezzo, Perugia, Orvieto or Viterbo on the way.

Do train strikes affect the trip?

Strikes in Italy hit regional trains above all; high-speed trains between Florence and Rome usually keep running, and by law a service is kept during morning and evening peak hours. Check for announced strikes the day before you travel.

What happens if my train is delayed?

High-speed trains on this route are usually on time or only a few minutes late. With Trenitalia, long delays give you a partial refund of the fare.

Is it safe to travel through the big stations?

Florence and Rome stations are busy and attract pickpockets, especially at ticket machines and departure boards. Keep your bag close, do not leave luggage unwatched on the train, and plan to be back in Florence before late night.
