An easy day trip: the train from Padova to Venezia Santa Lucia takes well under an hour, and trains run all day in both directions. Leave Padua in the morning and you get about eight hours in Venice, enough for a full walking tour from Piazza San Marco to the Rialto Bridge before an evening train back.

Is a day trip from Padua to Venice worth it?

Yes, and few day trips are this easy to reach. Trains leave Padova several times an hour and drop you at Venezia Santa Lucia on the Grand Canal; the morning train in the day plan is a Frecciarossa with its own ticket, while regionals on the line need no reservation. You can stand on Piazza San Marco by mid-morning and still be back in Padua for dinner, which also means you sleep and eat at Padua prices instead of Venice prices.

What Venice gives you that Padua cannot is the city itself: no cars, canals instead of streets, the Basilica and the Doge's Palace on one square, and the bridges over the Grand Canal. One day will not cover everything, so the plan here follows one walking route through San Marco, Dorsoduro and the Rialto quarter instead of trying to tick off the whole city.

The price is a long day on foot and crowds. The centre around San Marco is busy and expensive, the walk adds up to just under six kilometres, and the vaporetto rides between the station and the start and end of the tour take time at both ends of the day. If you want a slow, quiet day, Padua itself is the calmer choice.

Who this day trip suits

  • Travellers based in Padua: the train is short and frequent, so Venice fits into a single day without a hotel change.
  • Budget travellers: you see Venice by day and sleep and eat in Padua, where both cost less.
  • Art lovers: the Doge's Palace, the Gallerie dell'Accademia and Ca' Rezzonico all lie on the same walk.
  • Food lovers: a lunch of cicchetti at a bacaro, the small Venetian bites, is part of the day.
  • First-time visitors who want a clear route through the city instead of drifting between souvenir shops.

Go if you have never seen Venice or want its main sights in one well-paced day; if you have been before, or want a relaxed day without crowds, choose Verona or stay with Padua's own sights.

How to get from Padua to Venice by train

Take a Trenitalia train from Padova to Venezia Santa Lucia: it is quick, runs all day and ends on the Grand Canal. The morning train in the day plan is a Frecciarossa, which needs a ticket for that train because a regional ticket does not cover it; regionals on the same line need no reservation. FlixBus coaches also run to Venezia Mestre and Tronchetto, but the train brings you straight to the Grand Canal.

Train: Trenitalia Regionale or Trenitalia Frecciarossa

Trains leave Padova several times an hour from early morning until late evening; the fastest take about half an hour, slower regionals a little longer. Buy your ticket at the station or from Trenitalia online and make sure it runs to Venezia Santa Lucia, the station in the old town, not just to Venezia Mestre on the mainland. A regional ticket is valid only on regional trains, and a paper one must be validated in the machines before you board, otherwise you risk a fine on board. Frecciarossa and Italo trains also stop here and need a ticket for the specific train; since the morning train in the day plan is a Frecciarossa, buy the ticket for that train before you board.

The tour starts at Piazza San Marco, on the far side of the old town from the station. Take an ACTV vaporetto from the stop in front of Santa Lucia down the Grand Canal towards San Marco (line 2 is the faster one, line 1 the slow ride past every stop) and allow about 45 minutes from the train to the square, including the wait at the stop.

Padua to Venice day trip itinerary for one full day

Day plan for: Mon, Wed–Sun

The day hangs on a mid-morning start at Piazza San Marco and an evening train home, with the walking tour in between and lunch at its halfway point.

  1. Morning08:22 – 08:52

Take the Trenitalia train shortly after eight from Padova, arriving at Venezia Santa Lucia shortly before nine. If it runs as a Frecciarossa, you need a ticket for that train; regional tickets do not cover it. Walk out to the vaporetto stop, ride down the Grand Canal towards San Marco and walk the last stretch to Piazza San Marco.

This train puts you on the square shortly before ten, when the Basilica is already open to visitors and you still have the whole day ahead.

  2. Tour09:45 – 12:45

Open the tour in the browser on Piazza San Marco. The AI Tour Guide greets you there and leads you on to St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace, the Bridge of Sighs and San Zaccaria, telling the stories of each place and asking what you want to hear more about. The Doge's Palace is the visit to go inside this morning.

The San Marco stops lie a few minutes apart, so the morning goes into looking, not walking. San Zaccaria's interior is closed over midday, so you see it from its campo.

    Start the Venice tour

  3. Lunch12:45 – 13:45

Lunch after San Zaccaria and before Santa Maria della Salute. Move away from the waterfront around San Marco and eat cicchetti or a tramezzino at a bacaro.

It splits the tour at the point where the longer walk towards the Salute begins, and food away from San Marco is better and cheaper.

  4. Afternoon13:45 – 18:15

The guide continues to Santa Maria della Salute, seen from outside, then the Gallerie dell'Accademia, the Ponte dell'Accademia and Dorsoduro. Go inside Ca' Rezzonico, then walk on through Campo Santa Margherita and Campo San Polo to the Mercato di Rialto, San Giacomo di Rialto and finally the Rialto Bridge.

Dorsoduro is quieter than San Marco and Ca' Rezzonico is the afternoon's museum. The tour ends around a quarter past six, right when you head for the station, so a longer look inside the Accademia comes out of the time at the Rialto stops at the end.

    9. Rialto Bridge in Venice, stop 15 on the self-guided walking tour15Rialto Bridge
  5. Return18:15 – 19:54

Leave the Rialto Bridge by about a quarter past six, ride the vaporetto or walk back to Santa Lucia and take the train to Padova just before half past seven, arriving shortly before eight.

The transfer to the station takes about 45 minutes, and a 15 minute buffer keeps a slow boat from costing you the train.

Arrival to return departure: 10 h 34 min. Time for your visit: about 9 h.

Realistically you get about eight hours in Venice, seven of them on the tour; if you arrive late, keep the order and end the walk earlier, letting the Rialto stops go first.

A Venice walking tour in one day, from San Marco to Rialto

The walk runs from Piazza San Marco across the Grand Canal into Dorsoduro and back over to the Rialto Bridge: just under six kilometres, about an hour and a half of pure walking, mostly through narrow lanes and across small campi. The AI Tour Guide leads it as a conversation, so you hear why each place matters while you walk instead of reading signs.

The markers show the stops; the map does not trace the exact walking route.

AI Tour Guide in Venice

Your guide for the Venice tour

The AI Tour Guide leads this walk from Piazza San Marco to the Rialto Bridge as a conversation: it greets you on the square, tells you about the doges, the prisoners who crossed the Bridge of Sighs and the merchants of Rialto, and asks what you would like more of. It remembers your answers for the stops ahead, and you can interrupt it any time. You start it in the browser on Piazza San Marco.

What a Padua to Venice day trip costs

The day is driven by three things: the return train, the two recommended museum tickets for the Doge's Palace and Ca' Rezzonico, and lunch; the Basilica and the Accademia are optional extras you can add. The vaporetto from the station to San Marco and back comes on top of the total, and the cheapest place to save is food, by eating cicchetti at a bacaro instead of at a restaurant on San Marco.

One device is enough for the whole group: two people listen on two connected headphones, larger groups use the phone speaker.

The Doge's Palace ticket already includes the passage across the Bridge of Sighs from inside the palace, so the bridge needs no ticket of its own.

Getting back from Venice to Padua

The tour ends at the Rialto Bridge, so the way back starts there: take the vaporetto up the Grand Canal to Santa Lucia or walk, and allow about 45 minutes plus a 15 minute buffer before your train. Trains to Padova leave several times an hour in the evening, so missing one usually means a short wait, not a lost evening.

On Saturday and Sunday the same plan works with the evening train just before half past seven.

If you run late, end the tour early and let the Rialto stops go first rather than rushing the Dorsoduro museums. If you miss the evening connections, a late train still leaves Santa Lucia shortly before midnight from Monday to Thursday and on Sundays and reaches Padova after midnight; on Fridays and Saturdays there is no such late train, but a FlixBus coach leaves Tronchetto in the small hours, and on weekdays a Trenitalia bus also runs from Venezia Mestre to Padova around midnight.

Questions about the day trip from Padua to Venice

Do I need to pay the Venice access fee on a day trip?

Not for the rest of this year: the city ended the trial of the access fee after July, so day visitors neither pay nor register.

What about high water in Venice?

Acqua alta can flood low parts of the city between October and March. Look at the tide forecast the day before and pack shoes that can get wet if a high tide is announced.

Can I see the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua on the same trip?

Yes, on another day or before you leave, but book it weeks ahead: same-day tickets are not available.

Can I drive from Padua to Venice instead?

You can, but cars stop at Piazzale Roma, where the municipal AVM garage charges a day rate. The train is simpler and takes you directly to the Grand Canal.
