This is an easy day trip: direct regional trains link Pisa Centrale and Firenze Santa Maria Novella in about an hour, so a morning train gives you about nine hours in Florence before an evening train home. The day is long on foot rather than on rails, built around a walking tour from Ponte Vecchio to Piazzale Michelangelo.

Is a day trip from Pisa to Florence worth it?

Yes, and it is one of the simplest day trips in Tuscany. The train runs direct with no change, departures are frequent all day, and you arrive at a station that sits right by the historic centre. No traffic, no parking, no driving through restricted zones: you step off the train and walk.

Pisa's fame rests largely on one square; Florence fills a whole day with palaces, churches and galleries within walking distance of each other: the Uffizi, the Accademia, Palazzo Pitti with the Boboli Gardens, the cathedral and Piazza della Signoria. The price is pace. Florence has far more than one day can hold, so the day works best with a clear route and a decision about which interiors you actually want to enter.

Who this day trip suits

  • Art lovers who want the Uffizi, the Accademia and Palazzo Pitti on the same day
  • First-time visitors staying in Pisa who want to see Florence without moving hotels
  • Travellers on a budget, because the regional train is simple and no car is needed
  • Anyone with one free day in Tuscany who prefers a big city over small towns
  • Good walkers, since the day covers almost ten kilometres on foot

Go if you want Florence's art and architecture in one well-planned day; if you would rather walk slowly than queue for museums, or it is a Monday, Lucca is the better pick.

How to get from Pisa to Florence by train

Take a direct Trenitalia Regionale or Regionale Veloce train from Pisa Centrale to Firenze Santa Maria Novella: it is the quickest, simplest and most reliable way, with no change and no traffic. FlixBus also runs between Pisa and Florence, but it uses car parks on the edge of both cities and takes longer.

Train: Trenitalia Regionale

Trains leave from Pisa Centrale and arrive at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Florence's main station. The fast direct services take about an hour; some slower trains on the same line need noticeably longer, so pick a fast direct one from the timetable. On weekdays there are several departures an hour across the day, on Sundays a few less, and the morning is well covered on every day of the week. Buy your ticket from Trenitalia before you board, at the station or online; there is no need for a high-speed train, which costs much more for a few minutes saved. The fare is shown in the cost tool.

Pisa to Florence day trip itinerary: from the morning train to the evening ride home

Day plan for: Tue–Wed, Fri–Sat

Catch an early train so you start the tour at Ponte Vecchio around nine; the opening hours of the cathedral, Palazzo Vecchio and the Uffizi anchor the afternoon, and an evening train takes you home.

  1. Morning07:38 – 08:38

Take the direct train shortly after half past seven from Pisa Centrale, arriving at Firenze Santa Maria Novella shortly after half past eight. Walk through the centre to Ponte Vecchio.

This train gets you into Florence before the busiest part of the morning and leaves time for an unhurried walk to the first stop.

  2. Tour09:00 – 13:15

Open the tour in your browser at Ponte Vecchio. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells the story of the bridge, asks what interests you and leads you across the Oltrarno to Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, then back over the river to Palazzo Strozzi, the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, Mercato Centrale and the Galleria dell'Accademia.

Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens open early and the gardens close early in autumn, so they belong to the morning; Santa Maria Novella opens later on Fridays, which the late-morning slot covers, and the ground-floor market at Mercato Centrale is still trading when you pass.

    7. Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, stop 7 on the self-guided walking tour7Galleria dell'Accademia

    Start the Florence tour

  3. Lunch13:15 – 14:15

Break for lunch after the Galleria dell'Accademia and before Florence Cathedral. The streets between the two are short, so you can eat on the way to the Duomo.

It falls exactly where the morning's palaces and galleries give way to the afternoon around the cathedral and Piazza della Signoria.

  4. Afternoon14:15 – 18:00

The guide continues to Florence Cathedral, across Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Signoria and into Palazzo Vecchio, past the Loggia dei Lanzi to the Uffizi Gallery and on to the Basilica of Santa Croce before the climb to Piazzale Michelangelo. The few minutes of slack before you need to leave can go to a longer museum visit or to the view at the end.

The cathedral interior closes mid-afternoon, so it comes straight after lunch; Palazzo Vecchio follows while it is open, and the Uffizi ticket office closes in the late afternoon, so reach it around four. Keep an eye on the clock there, because Santa Croce stops admitting visitors in the late afternoon and you arrive around five.

    8. Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, stop 15 on the self-guided walking tour15Piazzale Michelangelo
  5. Return18:00 – 19:54

Leave Piazzale Michelangelo by six, walk back down and across the centre to Firenze Santa Maria Novella and take the direct train around seven, arriving at Pisa Centrale shortly before eight.

This leaves a buffer for the walk to the station and for finding your platform, with later direct trains as a fallback.

Arrival to return departure: 10 h 22 min. Time for your visit: about 9 h.

Arrival 08:38, tour start 09:00: 20 min to walk to the start, 2 min spare.

You get about nine hours in Florence; if you arrive late, cut from the end of the tour, Santa Croce and Piazzale Michelangelo first, and never shuffle the order.

Florence walking tour in one day: from Ponte Vecchio to Piazzale Michelangelo

Pisa to Florence day trip cost

The train both ways is the smaller part of the bill; the paid entrances are the big one, because the plan includes eight museums, palaces, gardens and churches, from the Uffizi and the Accademia to Palazzo Pitti, the Boboli Gardens, Palazzo Strozzi, Santa Maria Novella, Palazzo Vecchio and Santa Croce. Lunch adds the rest, and the easiest saving is to choose the interiors that matter most to you and see the others from outside, as the tour already does with Ponte Vecchio, the cathedral square, Piazza della Signoria and the Loggia dei Lanzi.

Getting back from Florence to Pisa

The way back is the same direct line in reverse, from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Pisa Centrale in about an hour. The tour ends on the far side of the river at Piazzale Michelangelo, so give yourself enough time to walk down and cross the centre to the station, plus a margin to find your train; leaving Piazzale Michelangelo by six for the train around seven leaves you that buffer.

If the day runs long, drop Santa Croce and Piazzale Michelangelo first and walk from the Uffizi straight to the station. If you miss the planned train, simply take one of the later direct trains: the last sensible one for a day trip leaves in the later evening and still gets you to Pisa Centrale well before midnight.

Questions about the day trip from Pisa to Florence

Can I leave my luggage at Pisa Centrale for the day?

Yes, Pisa Centrale has a luggage room that holds bags for up to 24 hours, so you can drop them before boarding and walk Florence with only a small bag.

Can I really visit all eight paid sights in one day?

The plan fits them in, but each gets a compact visit. If you want to spend longer in the Uffizi or the Accademia, skip one or two other interiors; the guide keeps the route and the stories either way.

Is driving from Pisa to Florence a good idea?

Not for a day trip. The car park by Santa Maria Novella station charges by the hour with no daily flat rate, and access to the centre is subject to traffic restrictions; the direct train is simpler.

What happens if it rains?

Most of the day's paid stops are indoors, so rain changes little before the afternoon; the open squares and the final view at Piazzale Michelangelo are the parts you may want to shorten.
