Venice works as a day trip from Verona, but it is a long day: you leave after breakfast, the walk through the city fills about seven hours, and you are back in Verona late in the evening. Direct trains take about an hour and a half on a typical service, and the Frecciarossa this plan uses needs about an hour and a quarter, which leaves you close to nine hours in Venice.

Is a day trip from Verona to Venice worth it?

Reaching Venice from Verona is simple: direct trains run from Verona Porta Nuova to Venezia Santa Lucia all day, and the station opens straight onto the Grand Canal. There is no car and no transfer to organise, and if you take a regional train instead of the faster Frecciarossa in the plan, there is no ticket to reserve either. If you are staying in Verona for more than a couple of days, it is the easiest way to see Venice without moving hotel.

What Venice gives you is something Verona cannot: a city on water, where you move on foot and by boat, and where Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance buildings stand within a short walk of each other. In one day you go from St Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace across the Grand Canal into Dorsoduro and back to the Rialto market.

The price is time and company. Around four hours of the day are spent on trains and boats, and the area around St Mark's fills up quickly once the tour groups arrive in the late morning. One day also means choosing one or two museums rather than seeing them all. Start in the morning, keep the inside visits few, and the day pays off.

Who this day trip suits

  • Travellers based in Verona for two days or more who want Venice without changing hotel
  • First-time visitors who want one full day in the lagoon city
  • History and architecture lovers, who get Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance Venice in one walk
  • Keen walkers who are happy to be on their feet from morning to evening

Go if you want to see Venice once without staying there and can handle a full day on foot and a late return; if crowds or a long day of walking put you off, choose Padua or Bologna instead.

How to get from Verona to Venice by train

The train is the way to do this trip: Trenitalia runs dozens of direct services a day from Verona Porta Nuova to Venezia Santa Lucia, the terminus in the historic centre. FlixBus also runs buses from Verona Porta Nuova, but they end at Mestre station or Tronchetto, outside the old town, and take longer than most trains.

Train: Trenitalia Regionale or Trenitalia

Direct trains leave Verona Porta Nuova several times an hour through the day, fewer on Sundays, and the ride takes between about an hour and a quarter and around two hours twenty, depending on the train. Regional trains, including the faster Regionale Veloce, need no reservation: buy the ticket at the station machines and validate a paper ticket at the machines on the platform before boarding, as an unvalidated ticket can earn you a fine. Faster long-distance trains, such as the Frecciarossa in the day plan, are booked as their own product with the operator, and a regional ticket does not cover them; Italo services in this timetable end at Venezia Mestre, so compare both operators before you pay. Whatever you take, stay on until Venezia Santa Lucia: Mestre is the mainland district, not the Venice of canals and bridges.

Venezia Santa Lucia opens directly onto the Grand Canal. Vaporetto lines 1 and 2 leave from the stops in front of the station toward St Mark's, and line 1 gives you a slow first look at the palaces along the whole Grand Canal; allow about three quarters of an hour from the platform to Piazza San Marco, including the wait for the boat.

Your Verona to Venice day trip itinerary

Day plan for: Mon, Wed–Sun

Take the morning direct train so you reach St Mark's before the late-morning crowds, walk the tour in order from the square to the Rialto Bridge, and keep an evening direct train back as your fixed point, with a later one in reserve.

  1. Morning07:22 – 08:52

Have coffee and a pastry in Verona, then take the direct Trenitalia train shortly after seven from Verona Porta Nuova, arriving at Venezia Santa Lucia just before nine. Take vaporetto 1 or 2 down the Grand Canal toward St Mark's and walk the last few minutes to Piazza San Marco.

This early train gets you to the square around a quarter to ten, ahead of most tour groups, and breakfast in Verona is cheaper than around St Mark's.

  2. Tour09:45 – 12:45

Open the tour in the browser on Piazza San Marco. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells you the stories of the square and leads you on: St Mark's Basilica, where you can step inside if you want, then the Doge's Palace, the main inside visit of the morning, the Bridge of Sighs seen from the outside, and San Zaccaria on its quiet campo just off the waterfront.

The big sights around St Mark's sit within a few minutes of each other, and the morning is when the basilica and the palace are easiest to visit before the square fills up.

    Start the Venice tour

  3. Lunch12:45 – 13:45

Lunch after San Zaccaria and before Santa Maria della Salute, a few streets back from the waterfront rather than on the square.

The next leg to La Salute is the longest walk of the tour, so it makes sense to eat first, and the restaurants right around St Mark's charge more for less.

  4. Afternoon13:45 – 18:00

The guide picks up at Santa Maria della Salute, seen from the outside, then takes you to the Gallerie dell'Accademia (an optional inside visit for art lovers), across the Ponte dell'Accademia into Dorsoduro and into Ca' Rezzonico, the afternoon's recommended museum. From there the walk continues to Campo Santa Margherita and Campo San Polo, past the Mercato di Rialto and San Giacomo di Rialto, whose stalls and doors are closed by this hour, to the Rialto Bridge. With about half an hour to spare afterwards, you can linger at the bridge or have a drink nearby before heading off.

Ca' Rezzonico fits well before its last admission, and ending at the Rialto Bridge leaves you a short way from the boat stops back to the station.

    9. Rialto Bridge in Venice, stop 15 on the self-guided walking tour15Rialto Bridge
  5. Return18:00 – 20:38

Leave the Rialto Bridge by six, take the vaporetto or walk to Venezia Santa Lucia and board the Trenitalia train shortly after seven, back at Verona Porta Nuova around half past eight.

Allow about three quarters of an hour for the boat, the wait and the walk to the platform, plus a quarter of an hour of buffer; if anything slips, one more direct train an hour later still gets you back the same evening.

Arrival to return departure: 10 h 18 min. Time for your visit: about 8.5 h.

Realistically you get close to nine hours in Venice; if you arrive late, keep the order and cut the end of the walk, the stretch from Campo San Polo to the Rialto Bridge, and skip the Accademia's interior.

A Venice walking tour in one day: from St Mark's to the Rialto

The tour is how you see Venice on this day instead of drifting between shop windows: it starts on Piazza San Marco, crosses the Grand Canal into Dorsoduro and comes back through San Polo to the Rialto Bridge, about 5.8 km and roughly an hour and a half of pure walking spread over the day. The AI Tour Guide leads the walk as a conversation, telling you what you are looking at and why it matters, while the map in the browser takes you from one stop to the next through the lanes.

Your guide for the Venice tour

On Piazza San Marco you open the tour in the browser, and the AI Tour Guide takes over: it greets you, tells you why a bridge leads straight from the Doge's Palace into a prison, and walks you on through Dorsoduro to the Rialto. Along the way it asks what catches your interest and remembers it, so the stories at Ca' Rezzonico or the market lean toward what you care about, and you can interrupt it at any point with your own question.

What a Verona to Venice day trip costs

The day's cost comes down to the train, two inside visits and food: the default selection covers the Doge's Palace, whose combined ticket includes the museums on St Mark's Square and the walk across the Bridge of Sighs from inside the palace, and Ca' Rezzonico, while the basilica and the Accademia are optional additions. Regional trains cost the same whenever you buy, faster trains such as the morning Frecciarossa are priced dynamically, and the vaporetto from the station comes on top of the total.

Buffer and private guide

Have breakfast in Verona before the train and buy single vaporetto rides rather than a day pass, which only pays off with three or more rides or a trip to the islands.

Prices as of October 2026.

Getting back from Venice to Verona

Every train back leaves from Venezia Santa Lucia, so the last thing you need in the evening is the boat or the walk from the Rialto to the station. Plan about three quarters of an hour for the vaporetto, the wait at the stop and the walk to the platform, add a quarter of an hour of buffer, and if you travel back on a paper regional ticket, validate it before you board.

If you fall behind, drop the inside visits first, the Accademia before Ca' Rezzonico, then cut the end of the walk after Campo San Polo, and remember that the reserve train an hour later is the last direct one back before eleven. If you miss that too, the late FlixBus from Tronchetto, and at weekends a late direct train, still get you to Verona Porta Nuova, but only shortly before midnight.

Questions about the day trip from Verona to Venice

Do I have to pay the Venice access fee on a day trip?

Not for now: the day-visitor access contribution only applied on the dates of the municipal trial, which has ended for this year, so there is nothing to pay or register before you travel.

Can I take my luggage to Venice?

Better not. Venice is crossed by bridge after bridge and has no cars, so pulling a suitcase through the lanes is hard work. Leave bags at your hotel in Verona and travel light, with comfortable shoes, a water bottle for the public fountains and a charged power bank.

Can I add Murano or Burano to the day?

Not without giving up most of the walk. The islands need a round trip of three hours or more by vaporetto, so on a day trip from Verona they would replace the afternoon in Dorsoduro and San Polo. Keep them for a longer stay.

Is it a good idea to drive from Verona to Venice instead?

It is possible, but the train is simpler. Cars stop at Piazzale Roma, where the municipal garage is, and the historic centre beyond is only reachable on foot or by boat, so you would still walk and take the vaporetto from there.
