Genoa is an easy day trip from Milan: the direct Intercity takes about an hour and forty minutes, so you can be in the city before ten and still be back in Milan in time for dinner. That gives you about six hours in Genoa, enough for the palaces, a viewpoint over the rooftops, the old harbour and the medieval centre on foot.

Is a day trip from Milan to Genoa worth it?

Yes, for most travellers. Direct trains run from Milano Centrale to Genova Piazza Principe all day, and the ride is short enough that an early train leaves you a full day on the ground. On the way the landscape changes from the flat Po plain through the green Apennines down to the Ligurian Sea, so you arrive somewhere that feels nothing like Milan.

What Genoa gives you is a working port city with a huge medieval centre on the UNESCO list, the Renaissance palaces of Via Garibaldi, narrow alleys called caruggi, and food that is a reason to come on its own: pesto, focaccia sold by weight, farinata and fresh seafood. It is far less touristy than Florence or Venice, which is both its charm and its edge.

Go with the right picture in mind. Genoa is real and a little gritty, not a polished Riviera postcard, and the harbour is for ships, not for swimming. If you want pretty seaside villages, Camogli or Portofino suit you better; if you want a living Italian city with depth, Genoa repays the trip.

Who this day trip suits

  • Architecture and history lovers: the Palazzi dei Rolli along Via Garibaldi look like nowhere else in Italy.
  • Families with children: the Galata Museum of the Sea and the old harbour, where the tour passes the Aquarium, make the day easy to sell.
  • Food lovers: pesto, warm focaccia and seafood in the city where they belong.
  • Independent travellers who want an Italian city that lives for itself rather than for visitors.
  • Budget travellers: a short train ride, several free stops and simple, good food.

Go if you want palaces, food and a real port city in one long day; pick Como or Bergamo if you prefer something pretty and compact over something big and gritty.

How to get from Milan to Genoa by train

Take the Trenitalia Intercity from Milano Centrale to Genova Piazza Principe: it is the fastest regular direct link, runs through the whole day and gets you in well before the sights open. FlixBus also runs from Milan to the bus station next to Piazza Principe, but the ride is longer than by train.

Train: Trenitalia Intercity or Trenitalia

The Intercity on the coastal line is the train to plan around. It leaves from Milano Centrale, takes about an hour and a half to an hour and forty minutes and stops at Genova Piazza Principe; most services continue to Genova Brignole. There are several departures every morning, so an early start is easy. A seat reservation is compulsory, which means you buy a ticket for a specific train on the Trenitalia site or at the station and ride in your assigned seat. Booking a few days ahead usually gets you the cheaper fares, which the cost tool shows.

Another service: Intercity

The Regionale Veloce also runs direct from Milano Centrale to Genova Piazza Principe, but it takes about two hours and runs far less often than the Intercity. It is a fallback if the Intercity you want is full. The last direct regional train back leaves earlier in the evening than the last Intercity. If you hold a paper regional ticket, validate it in the green and white machines before boarding; conductors fine travellers who forget.

Train

Italo now connects Milano Centrale and Genoa, but only with one evening train out and one early-morning train back. It arrives in Genoa near midnight, so it does not work for a day trip; it only makes sense if you plan to stay the night.

From Genova Piazza Principe the tour starts at Piazza De Ferrari, the main square between the old centre and the modern city. It is about half an hour on foot through the centre, or you can take a city bus; allow a few minutes more for a first coffee, and a 24-hour public transport ticket is worth it if you also want the lifts and funiculars.

Milan to Genoa day trip itinerary: from the morning train to the evening return

Day plan for: Tue–Sun

Take the Intercity just after eight, start walking at Piazza De Ferrari around a quarter past ten, and let the tour carry you from the palaces down to the harbour and back into the medieval centre before the evening train.

  1. Morning08:05 – 09:44

Take the direct Intercity just after eight from Milano Centrale; it arrives at Genova Piazza Principe at around a quarter to ten. Walk about half an hour to Piazza De Ferrari and grab a slice of focaccia or a coffee on the way.

This train puts you in Genoa before the museums open, so the whole day runs without rushing and the return can wait until the evening.

  2. Tour10:15 – 13:30

Open the tour in your browser at Piazza De Ferrari. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells you about the fountain square and asks what interests you most, then leads you along Via Garibaldi, where you spend about three quarters of an hour inside Palazzo Rosso from around a quarter to eleven. Around a quarter to twelve you reach Spianata Castelletto for the view over the rooftops and the port, around a quarter past twelve Palazzo Reale, which you see from outside, and from around half past twelve you spend about an hour inside the Galata Museum of the Sea.

The palace museums of Via Garibaldi are best in the fresh morning hours, and the viewpoint gives you the layout of the city before you head down to the harbour.

  3. Lunch13:30 – 14:30

Have lunch after the Galata Museum of the Sea and before the Aquarium, in the streets around the old harbour. Order trofie al pesto, farinata or seafood, or keep it quick with focaccia from a focacceria, sold by weight.

The break falls naturally between the two harbour stops, and it recharges you for the afternoon.

  4. Afternoon14:30 – 16:30

The guide continues past the Aquarium around half past two, which you see from outside, then Palazzo San Giorgio from outside around a quarter to three, San Lorenzo Cathedral around a quarter past three, Porta Soprana in passing around a quarter to four and Palazzo Ducale around four, where the tour ends around half past four. If you want extra time for the courtyard of Palazzo Ducale or a drink in the old town, book a later train back.

The harbour stops follow straight after lunch, the cathedral is open again after its midday break, and the walk ends in the centre, an easy transfer to the station.

    5. Palazzo Ducale in Genoa, stop 10 on the self-guided walking tour10Palazzo Ducale
  5. Return16:30 – 18:55

Leave Palazzo Ducale by about half past four, allow about half an hour on foot back to Genova Piazza Principe and a short buffer, and take the direct train at around a quarter past five, which arrives at Milano Centrale shortly before seven.

The half-hour walk plus the buffer covers a slow pace or a wrong turn in the caruggi, and the reserved seat means you do not need to queue on the platform.

Arrival to return departure: 7 h 35 min. Time for your visit: about 6.5 h.

Arrival 09:44, tour start 10:15: 30 min to walk to the start, 1 min spare.

You get about six hours in Genoa; if you arrive late, keep the tour order and shorten the end by seeing Porta Soprana and Palazzo Ducale from outside only.

Milan to Genoa day trip cost

The day's cost comes from three things: the Intercity tickets, which are cheaper when you book ahead, the paid sights, and food. The cost tool starts with Palazzo Rosso, the Galata Museum of the Sea, San Lorenzo Cathedral and Palazzo Ducale as the entrances that shape this day; the tour passes the Aquarium from outside, so its ticket is not part of the plan.

Getting back from Genoa to Milan

The way back is the same line in reverse: Intercity trains from Genova Piazza Principe to Milano Centrale run through the evening, and your reserved ticket is for one specific train. The train at around a quarter past five is the comfortable choice, arriving shortly before seven, on weekdays and at weekends alike; leave Palazzo Ducale by about half past four.

Give yourself about half an hour on foot from the end of the tour to the station plus a short buffer on the platform. Book the return together with the outbound train in the morning, so you are not deciding at the ticket machine in the evening.

If you are running late, drop the extra time at the end first, then see Porta Soprana and Palazzo Ducale from outside only. If you miss your reserved train, later Intercity and Regionale Veloce services still run in the evening; ask at the Trenitalia desk about changing your ticket, and a late FlixBus to Milano Lampugnano leaves from the bus station by Piazza Principe.

Questions about the day trip from Milan to Genoa

Do I need to book the Genoa Aquarium in advance?

Yes, if you want to go inside. Entry works with time slots that change by date. The day plan passes the building from outside, so an inside visit comes on top of the day; pair it with a later train back.

Is Genoa good for a day trip with children?

Yes. The Galata Museum of the Sea keeps children busy and is free for under-sixes, and the tour passes the Aquarium at the old harbour. Lunch on focaccia or farinata is quick and child-friendly.

Can I swim in Genoa on a day trip?

Not at the harbour. For a swim you would head to Nervi or Boccadasse, which needs extra time beyond this day.

Should I drive from Milan to Genoa instead of taking the train?

The train is the better choice: it is quicker into the centre, and parking in Genoa is difficult and charged by the hour.

Is the old town safe to walk around?

The tour keeps to the main squares and streets. Some narrow alleys around Via della Maddalena, Vico della Rosa and Via del Campo can feel rough, so avoid wandering deep into them alone, especially as a solo woman.
