A day trip from Milan to Turin is easy to do: the direct train takes about an hour each way, so you leave Milano Centrale just before eight and are back in Milan in the evening. In return you get almost nine hours in Turin, enough for the whole walking tour from Porta Palazzo to Monte dei Cappuccini with five palace and museum visits along the way.

Is a day trip from Milan to Turin worth it?

Yes, if you come for what Milan does not have. Turin was Italy's first capital, from 1861 to 1865, and the House of Savoy left it a royal centre of palaces and arcaded Baroque squares. Add the Egyptian Museum, the Mole Antonelliana and a café culture built on chocolate, gianduia and bicerin, and you have a city that many visitors expect to be industrial and find elegant instead.

Getting there is easy: direct trains link Milano Centrale and Torino Porta Nuova all day, the fastest in about an hour, the regional ones in about two. What fills the day is Turin itself. The tour with its five paid interiors takes about seven hours, so the plan starts early and ends with the evening train. Turin's appeal is cumulative rather than one single landmark, and the museums alone could fill more than a day, so choose two or three to go deep on if you prefer a slower pace.

Who this day trip suits

  • Museum lovers: the Egyptian Museum, the Royal Palace and the Mole are on the same walk; the plan gives the Egyptian Museum about three quarters of an hour, so drop another interior if you want longer among the pharaohs.
  • Food and chocolate lovers: Turin is the home of gianduia, vermouth and the Slow Food movement, and a piola lunch is the local way to eat.
  • Architecture fans: Savoy palaces, Baroque squares under long porticoes and a neoclassical church on the Po.
  • Travellers who have already seen Milan's Duomo and Last Supper and want a second, calmer city.
  • Budget travellers: the squares, the market, the churches and the hill are free, and the tavern lunches are inexpensive.

Go to Turin if you have already seen Milan's main sights and want royal palaces, the Egyptian Museum and a real café culture in one full day; if you only have one day in Milan or want a short, easy outing, pick Bergamo or Como instead.

How to get from Milan to Turin by train

The direct train from Milano Centrale to Torino Porta Nuova is the way to do this trip: no change, departures through the whole day, and you arrive in the city centre. FlixBus coaches from Milan's Lampugnano bus station to Turin are a cheaper option for some, but they take about two hours and leave from the edge of Milan.

Train: Trenitalia or Italo

Trenitalia runs direct trains between Milano Centrale and Torino Porta Nuova roughly twice an hour, with Frecciarossa high-speed trains doing the trip in about an hour and regional stopping services in about two. Italo's high-speed trains leave Milano Centrale as well and stop at Torino Porta Susa, the other central station, in under an hour. The morning train in the plan is a direct Trenitalia service that takes about an hour and brings you to Porta Nuova before nine; any train that arrives at a similar time works just as well. High-speed fares are dynamic, so buying a few days ahead on the operators' websites tends to pay off, and a high-speed ticket is tied to the train you booked. Check which Turin station your ticket names, especially for the way back.

Milan to Turin day trip itinerary: from the morning train to the evening train

Day plan for: Wed–Sat

The early train anchors the day: palaces in the morning, lunch near Piazza San Carlo, museums after lunch, then the river and the hill at the end before the evening train.

  1. Morning07:53 – 08:55

Take the direct Trenitalia train shortly before eight from Milano Centrale; it arrives at Torino Porta Nuova shortly before nine. From there walk about 35 minutes to Porta Palazzo market for a start around half past nine. The same train runs on Saturdays as well.

Porta Palazzo is a morning market on weekdays, and arriving before nine leaves the whole tour in reach.

  2. Tour09:30 – 13:15

Open the tour in the browser at Porta Palazzo. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells you about the market and leads you on to the Royal Palace around a quarter past ten, Palazzo Madama around a quarter past eleven, Piazza Castello around noon, which you see from the square itself, and down Via Roma to Piazza San Carlo around half past twelve. Along the way it asks what interests you and builds on it.

The two palaces are the longest interior visits of the morning, and doing them first leaves the afternoon for the museums on Via Roma and around.

  3. Lunch13:15 – 14:15

Lunch after Piazza San Carlo and before the Egyptian Museum. A piola, a traditional Piedmontese tavern such as Piola da Cianci near the Royal Palace, serves hearty local food at fair prices.

Turin's kitchens close between meals, so lunch belongs in the middle of the day, and you are right in the centre at this point of the walk.

  4. Afternoon14:15 – 18:30

The guide picks up at the Egyptian Museum around a quarter to two for a focused visit of about three quarters of an hour, then takes you into the Museum of the Risorgimento around half past two. You walk through the Galleria Subalpina around half past three, visit the Mole Antonelliana around a quarter past four, cross the Po to the Gran Madre di Dio around a quarter past five and reach Monte dei Cappuccini around a quarter to six. Optional: about half an hour of slack lets you stop for a bicerin on the way; sip it, do not stir. If the Egyptian Museum is your main reason to come, give it longer and skip the Museum of the Risorgimento instead.

The museums fit before their last entries in this order, and the walk ends outdoors by the river and on the hill, where nothing closes.

    5. Monte dei Cappuccini in Turin, stop 11 on the self-guided walking tour11Monte dei Cappuccini
  5. Return18:30 – 20:30

Leave Monte dei Cappuccini by about half past six at the latest, walk back to Torino Porta Susa and take the Italo train just after half past seven, arriving at Milano Centrale around half past eight.

The walk to Porta Susa takes the better part of an hour, and a quarter of an hour of buffer at the station keeps the evening relaxed.

Arrival to return departure: 10 h 40 min. Time for your visit: about 9 h.

Arrival 08:55, tour start 09:30: 35 min to walk to the start.

Realistically you get almost nine hours in Turin; if you arrive late, keep the order and cut from the end, first Monte dei Cappuccini, then the Gran Madre di Dio.

A Turin walking tour in one day: from Porta Palazzo to Monte dei Cappuccini

The walking tour is how you see Turin on this day: from the market at Porta Palazzo through the royal heart around Piazza Castello, down to Piazza San Carlo and the museums, past the Mole and across the Po to the hill of Monte dei Cappuccini. It covers 4.7 km with a little over an hour of actual walking, mostly flat streets under the porticoes, and the AI Tour Guide leads it as a conversation, from stop to stop.

What a Milan to Turin day trip costs

Three things drive the cost of this day: the train fare, which is dynamic on the high-speed trains, the five paid visits the plan includes (Royal Palace, Palazzo Madama, Egyptian Museum, Museum of the Risorgimento and the Mole Antonelliana), and food. The squares, the market, the Gran Madre and Monte dei Cappuccini are free, so the simplest saving is to choose two or three of the museums and enjoy the rest of the walk without tickets.

Getting back from Turin to Milan

On the recommended days, Wednesday to Saturday, the plan takes the Italo train just after half past seven from Torino Porta Susa, arriving at Milano Centrale around half past eight. Monte dei Cappuccini is on the far side of the Po, so leave it by about half past six: the walk to the station takes the better part of an hour, and a quarter of an hour of buffer before departure keeps it calm.

Make sure you head for Porta Susa, not Porta Nuova, where you arrived in the morning.

If you run late, drop Monte dei Cappuccini first and then the Gran Madre di Dio; both are free, so no ticket is lost. If you miss the evening Italo, a later direct Trenitalia train from Porta Susa still brings you to Milano Centrale before eleven, and FlixBus coaches to Lampugnano leave Turin until around nine in the evening.

Questions about the day trip from Milan to Turin

Do I need to book the Egyptian Museum and the Mole in advance?

Yes. Both can sell out and lines at the door are common, so buy timed tickets online before you leave Milan, matching the times in the day plan.

Is one day enough for Turin?

For the main sights on this walk, yes. If you want to go deep into the museums, one day is tight: the plan gives the Egyptian Museum about three quarters of an hour, yet it alone could fill a day, so pick two or three interiors and give them proper time.

What if it rains?

The centre is full of porticoed pavements, so most of the walk stays dry, and the palaces and museums fill much of the day anyway. Only the end at the Gran Madre and Monte dei Cappuccini is fully outdoors.

Porta Nuova or Porta Susa: which station should I use?

Both are central. In the plan you arrive at Porta Nuova on Trenitalia and leave from Porta Susa on Italo. Check the station printed on your ticket, especially for the return.

How do I drink a bicerin?

Sip it from the top without stirring: the layers of coffee, chocolate and cream are the point.
