Verona makes a long but rewarding day trip from Milan: the direct regional train takes just under two hours each way, and an early departure still leaves you about 8.5 hours in town. That is enough to walk the whole old centre, from the Roman Arena to Castelvecchio, with a proper lunch in between and an unhurried train home in the evening.

Is a day trip from Milan to Verona worth it?

Yes, for most visitors. Direct regional trains link Milano Centrale and Verona Porta Nuova in just under two hours, so the journey takes close to four hours of the day in total; the high-speed train cuts that to about two and a half. Verona's centre is compact and flat, which means you can see a lot on foot without planning around buses or long transfers.

What Verona gives you is something Milan does not: Roman layers you can walk between, from the Arena and Porta Borsari to Ponte Pietra and the Roman theatre on the far bank of the Adige, under a medieval city of towers, squares and the Gothic tombs of the Scaliger family. It is also a good food city, with risotto all'Amarone, bigoli with duck and Valpolicella from the hills just outside town.

Go with the right expectations about Romeo and Juliet. The balcony at Casa di Giulietta is a stop on the walk, but the story is mostly legend; the Arena, the squares, the river and the food are the reasons to come.

Who this day trip suits

  • First-time visitors to northern Italy who want a classic old city that feels very different from Milan
  • History and architecture lovers, because Roman, medieval and Renaissance Verona sit within easy walking distance of each other
  • Couples, solo travellers and small groups looking for a relaxed day that needs little logistics
  • Food lovers who want Veronese dishes and local wine with lunch
  • Travellers on a rainy or grey day, when a city walk beats a day on the lakes

Go if you want a full day in a Roman and medieval city with little travel stress; choose the lakes instead if the weather is perfect and scenery matters more to you than streets and squares.

How to get from Milan to Verona by train

The plan uses the direct Trenord regional train from Milano Centrale to Verona Porta Nuova: it needs no reservation and runs roughly every hour, so the early start is easy to fit. Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains on the same route are faster but need a reserved seat. FlixBus coaches from Milan's Lampugnano bus station also go to Verona Porta Nuova, but they take over two hours.

Train: Trenord

The Trenord RegioExpress also runs directly from Milano Centrale to Verona Porta Nuova, calling at Treviglio, Brescia and Peschiera. It takes just under two hours and leaves roughly every hour. There is no seat reservation, so you can board any train with a valid ticket, but paper tickets must be validated in the machines on the platform before you board, because fines for unvalidated tickets are steep. On summer weekends these trains can be crowded with cyclists and day trippers, which is when the high-speed train is worth the extra cost.

Milan to Verona day trip itinerary: from the Arena to Castelvecchio

Day plan for: Tue–Fri

Take the early direct train so the tour can start by mid-morning, eat lunch in the middle of the old centre, and finish at Castelvecchio with time to walk back to the station for an evening train.

  1. Morning07:25 – 09:17

Take the Trenord train from Milano Centrale shortly before half past seven, arriving at Verona Porta Nuova just after nine. Walk or take a bus into the centre to Piazza Bra.

This early train still lets you sleep reasonably and gives you the full day in Verona; the walk in from the station gets you to the Arena just as the tour starts.

  2. Tour10:00 – 12:45

Open the tour in your browser at Piazza Bra by the Arena. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells you the stories of each place and asks what you want to hear more about as it leads you past San Fermo Maggiore, to Casa di Giulietta, up to the Torre dei Lamberti, into Piazza delle Erbe and on to Piazza dei Signori.

Mornings are the calmest time in Verona before the tour groups fill the centre, and this part of the walk covers the busiest sights while they are still manageable.

  3. Lunch12:45 – 13:45

Have lunch after Piazza dei Signori and before the Arche Scaligere. Step a few minutes off the main streets to find an osteria serving risotto all'Amarone or bigoli with duck ragù.

Many kitchens close in the afternoon, so lunching now avoids being left with overpriced tourist menus; places around the Arena and Juliet's balcony charge more for the same dishes.

  4. Afternoon13:45 – 18:00

The guide picks up the walk at the Arche Scaligere, which you see through their iron fence, then takes you past the Basilica di Sant'Anastasia, across Ponte Pietra to the Teatro Romano and its archaeological museum, back over the river to the Duomo, through Porta Borsari and finally to the Castelvecchio Museum.

The afternoon follows the river loop in a natural line. Castelvecchio's last entry comes in the late afternoon, so keep moving at the earlier stops; any spare half hour at the end is good for a drink near the castle.

    7. Castelvecchio Museum in Verona, stop 13 on the self-guided walking tour13Castelvecchio Museum
  5. Return18:00 – 20:38

Leave Castelvecchio by around six at the latest and walk back to Verona Porta Nuova. Catch the Trenord train at around quarter to seven, arriving at Milano Centrale shortly after half past eight.

Around twenty-five minutes on foot plus a quarter hour of buffer covers finding the platform and validating your ticket; missing this train means waiting about an hour for the next regional one.

Arrival to return departure: 9 h 26 min. Time for your visit: about 8.5 h.

Arrival 09:17, tour start 10:00: 30 min to walk to the start, 13 min spare.

Realistically you get about eight hours in Verona; if you arrive late, shorten the end of the tour by spending less time at the Duomo and Castelvecchio, rather than skipping the earlier stops.

Verona walking tour in one day

Your guide for the Verona tour

The AI Tour Guide leads you through Verona from the Arena to Castelvecchio and talks with you along the way: about the Scaliger lords and their tombs, the Roman city under the medieval one, and how much of the Romeo and Juliet story is legend. It asks what interests you, remembers it and goes deeper there, and you can interrupt at any time. You start it in the browser when you reach Piazza Bra.

Milan to Verona day trip cost

The day's cost comes down to the train fare, four paid entrances and food. The cost tool starts with Juliet's House, the ticket worth reserving ahead, the climb up the Torre dei Lamberti for the view over the old town, the Teatro Romano with its archaeological museum and the Castelvecchio Museum at the end of the walk, while the Arena, the Scaliger Tombs and the other outside stops are seen from the street; taking the regional train rather than the high-speed one and eating away from the main squares are where you save most.

Buffer and private guide

With the Torre dei Lamberti, the Roman theatre and Castelvecchio already in the plan, the Verona Card usually works out cheaper than single tickets, especially if you add the inside of the Arena; it starts when you first use it, and Juliet's House still needs its own timed reservation online.

Prices as of October 2026.

Getting back from Verona to Milan

The recommended way back is the direct Trenord regional train from Verona Porta Nuova to Milano Centrale in just under two hours; high-speed trains cover the same line in about an hour and a quarter if you reserve one. Castelvecchio is on the far side of the centre from the station, so leave yourself around twenty-five minutes for the walk and a quarter hour of buffer.

Buy your regional ticket before boarding and validate it if it is a paper one; the train runs without reservation, so you simply board.

If you are running late, cut the end of the tour first: skip the inside of the Duomo or Castelvecchio and head to the station from Porta Borsari. If you miss your train, the next Trenord regional train leaves about an hour later, and the last one goes shortly before nine in the evening.

Questions about the day trip from Milan to Verona

Can I bring luggage on a Verona day trip?

Travel light with a backpack. The old town is paved with cobblestones that are hard on wheeled suitcases, and the walk covers several kilometres.

Can I combine Verona and Lake Garda in one day?

It is possible but tight, and you would have to drop much of the walking tour. Verona and Lake Garda work better on separate days.

Is Verona a good choice on a rainy day?

Yes. A city day in Verona holds up much better in grey weather than a lake trip, and several stops on the tour, such as the museums and the cathedral, are indoors.

Is the Romeo and Juliet connection real?

Mostly not: the balcony and the house are tied to a legend, not to a historical couple. Enjoy the courtyard, but come for the Arena, the squares and the food. Please do not stick notes to the walls with chewing gum, the city pays to clean them off every year.

Do I need to carry water and cash?

Bring a water bottle, since Verona has free drinking fountains around the centre, including on Piazza Bra. Cards work almost everywhere, but a little cash helps in small bars and for the toilet at Porta Nuova station.
