A day trip from Rome to Capri works only if you take the early train and accept a long day: a train to Naples, a change to the port and a ferry across the gulf take up most of the morning, and you are back in Rome late at night. In return you get about four hours on the island, enough to walk from Marina Grande up to the Piazzetta and on through the Gardens of Augustus and past Via Krupp and Belvedere Cannone to the Charterhouse of San Giacomo. If you cannot leave early or have only a few days in Rome, choose a closer trip.

Is a day trip from Rome to Capri worth it?

There is no direct way to Capri. You always go through Naples: train to Napoli Centrale, a transfer across the city to the port at Molo Beverello, then the ferry to Marina Grande. Each change needs a margin, so the journey eats most of the morning and the whole evening, and what is left on the island is a single afternoon.

What that afternoon gives you is something Rome cannot: a harbour, a small town square high above the sea, the Krupp gardens and the hairpin path of Via Krupp cut into the cliff, and the outside of a Carthusian monastery from the fourteenth century. It is a first look at Capri, not the whole island. Anacapri, a boat trip and the Blue Grotto do not fit into the same day, and trying to add them is the most common way to spoil it.

Expect company. Capri is one of the most visited islands in Italy and day visitors fill the town by midday, also outside high summer. The trip pays off for travellers who already know Rome, are happy to start early and come home late, and want a sea day more than another museum.

Who this day trip suits

  • Travellers on a longer Rome stay who have already seen the main sights and want a complete change of scene
  • Early risers who do not mind getting back to Rome late at night
  • Walkers who enjoy an uphill town and coastal paths more than queues for entrances
  • First-time visitors to Capri who want an overview before deciding whether to come back for a night
  • Couples or friends for whom the ferry ride across the Gulf of Naples is part of the outing

Go if you have a longer stay, can take the early train and want a taste of Capri; with three days or fewer in Rome, or if you want the Blue Grotto and Anacapri too, choose Naples or Orvieto, or stay on the island overnight.

How to get from Rome to Capri: train to Naples, ferry to the island

The way to go is a train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale and a ferry from Molo Beverello to Marina Grande, because it is the most direct connection and the ferries from Naples go straight to the island's main harbour. In this plan that means a Trenitalia Intercity to Naples and an NLG ferry across.

Combined journey: Trenitalia Intercity + NLG

The train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale takes about two hours on an Intercity; faster Italo and Trenitalia trains also run on the line. Fares change with demand, so booking online early pays, and the ticket on your phone is enough for the conductor. In Naples you change from the station to the port at Molo Beverello: a taxi is quicker than the bus, which tends to put you on a later ferry. Plan at least an hour and a half between arrival at Napoli Centrale and the ferry, for the ride, the ticket and boarding. NLG and SNAV run fast ferries from Molo Beverello to Marina Grande, a crossing of under an hour; only a few departures fit a day trip, so match train and ferry before you buy either. Outside summer you can usually buy the ferry ticket at the port, in peak season book it online. Italo also sells a combined ticket with a shuttle bus to the port and a SNAV ferry, which adds one more change.

The ferry docks at Marina Grande, which is also where the walking tour starts, so there is no transfer to another place. Still, the plan allows close to an hour between landing and the tour start, for getting off the boat, through the busy pier area and ready to set off. The town of Capri and the Piazzetta sit above the harbour: the tour walks up, and the funicular from Marina Grande to the Piazzetta is the way to save your legs on the way back down.

Rome to Capri day trip itinerary: early train, island afternoon, evening ferry

Day plan for: Thu–Sun

The day hangs on two fixed points, the morning ferry out of Naples and the late afternoon ferry back, so you leave Rome early and spend the hours in between walking from the harbour up through the town.

  1. Morning07:26 – 12:25

Take the Intercity from Roma Termini early in the morning, just before half past seven, arriving at Napoli Centrale around half past nine. Take a taxi to Molo Beverello, buy or collect your ferry ticket and board the late-morning NLG ferry, which lands at Capri Marina Grande shortly before half past twelve. Get your bearings at the harbour before you start.

This is the connection that lands you at Marina Grande early enough for a real afternoon; the long wait in Naples is your safety margin for the change from station to port.

  2. Tour13:15 – 13:45

Open the tour in the browser at Marina Grande. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells you how the island's main harbour grew at the foot of Monte Solaro, asks what you are curious about and walks you through the first stop.

Starting where the ferry lands means no lost time, and you understand the harbour before you climb away from it.

  3. Lunch13:45 – 14:45

Eat near Marina Grande, after the first stop and before the walk up to the Piazzetta. A panino caprese or a slice of pizza is quick and local; a sit-down lunch fits too.

You arrive hungry after a long morning, and it is easier to eat before the uphill walk than to hunt for a table in the busy Piazzetta.

  4. Afternoon14:45 – 17:15

The guide takes you up to the Piazzetta, then to the Gardens of Augustus, past Via Krupp, which you see from outside on this day without walking down the path, to Belvedere Cannone and on to the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, which you also see from outside; the walk ends there for this day around a quarter to five. The Gardens of Augustus are the one entrance worth paying for on this day. The half hour until you leave, around a quarter past five, is spare time for a pause, not enough for the tour's last three stops, Belvedere di Tragara, the Faraglioni and the Natural Arch: they are an optional end better kept for an overnight stay.

This order follows the walk from the town to the south coast, and ending at the Charterhouse leaves a margin before the ferry.

    5. Charterhouse of San Giacomo in Capri, stop 6 on the self-guided walking tour6Charterhouse of San Giacomo
  5. Return17:15 – 22:34

Leave the Charterhouse of San Giacomo by about a quarter past five, head back to the Piazzetta and take the funicular down to Marina Grande; allow about 40 minutes for the walk, the wait and the ride, then a quarter of an hour of buffer before the NLG ferry shortly after six. Once it reaches Molo Beverello, take a taxi to Napoli Centrale for the evening Intercity, arriving at Roma Termini around half past ten.

The ride down and the boarding queue at the harbour need time, and the margin in Naples covers the change from port to station.

Arrival to return departure: 5 h 45 min. Time for your visit: about 4 h.

You get about four hours on Capri, lunch included; if your ferry lands late, cut from the end of the tour, first the Charterhouse of San Giacomo, then Belvedere Cannone, and keep the walk in its order.

A Capri walking tour in one day: from the harbour to the Krupp gardens

The walking tour is how you see Capri on this day instead of drifting between shops around the Piazzetta: it climbs from the ferry pier at Marina Grande into the town, runs out to the Krupp gardens and the south coast and ends, for a day tripper, at the Charterhouse of San Giacomo. The full route is 5.7 km to the Natural Arch, about an hour and three quarters of pure walking; the AI Tour Guide leads it as a conversation, so you can stop, ask and change the pace whenever you like.

Your guide for the Capri tour

From the moment you step off the ferry at Marina Grande, the AI Tour Guide leads this walk and talks with you on the way: about the Krupp family and their gardens and path, about the monks of San Giacomo, about how the Piazzetta became the island's square. It asks what catches your eye, remembers it and shapes the stories around it, and you can interrupt any time. You start it in the browser at the harbour.

Rome to Capri day trip cost: train, ferry and the gardens

Most of the money goes on getting there: a train to Naples and a ferry each way, and the ferry adds Capri's landing contribution on the way out in season; the taxi between station and port and the funicular on the island come on top. On the island the Gardens of Augustus are the only paid entrance in the plan, since the Charterhouse is seen from outside on this day, and street food such as a panino caprese keeps lunch simple.

Getting back from Capri to Rome

The way back runs in reverse: down to Marina Grande, the ferry to Molo Beverello, a taxi to Napoli Centrale and the train to Roma Termini. The ride down from the town and the queue at the pier take longer than they look, so be at the harbour well before the ferry rather than walking down at the last moment.

In Naples you have about an hour and a half between the ferry and the train, which covers the transfer to the station but leaves little room for a late ferry. Head straight for a taxi at Molo Beverello rather than lingering at the port.

If time runs short, drop the end of the tour first, the Charterhouse of San Giacomo and then Belvedere Cannone, and head down to the harbour. If you still miss the ferry, there is no confirmed later connection in this plan: ask at the ticket offices at Marina Grande for the next crossing to Naples, check onward trains to Rome, or take it as the reason to spend the night on the island.

Questions about the day trip from Rome to Capri

Can I fit in the Blue Grotto on a day trip from Rome?

Not with this plan. The grotto can close without warning, and with about four hours on the island you would have to give up most of the walk; if it matters to you, stay overnight and keep a backup such as the Faraglioni.

Is it better to stay a night on Capri?

If you can, yes. The evening and early morning are much calmer once the day visitors leave, and you have time for a visit inside the Charterhouse of San Giacomo and for the tour's optional end at Belvedere di Tragara, the Faraglioni and the Natural Arch.

Is Capri a good day trip with only three days in Rome?

Usually not. The journey takes a big share of the day, and you shortchange both Rome and Capri; a closer trip such as Naples or Orvieto fits a short stay better.

Do I need to book the ferry in advance?

Outside summer you can usually buy it at the port in Naples; in peak season book online. Either way, choose the ferry together with your train so the change in Naples has enough margin.

What should I bring?

Comfortable shoes for walking uphill on cobblestones, water and sunscreen, especially in summer, since much of the walk is in the open.
