A day trip from Rome to Naples is an easy one to plan: direct trains run from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale, a little under an hour and a half on the morning Trenitalia train and a little over an hour on the fast Italo service back. That leaves you about seven hours in Naples, enough to walk from the castle on the sea to the cathedral in the old town with a proper lunch in between.

Is a day trip from Rome to Naples worth it?

Yes, for most travellers. Naples is one of the few big Italian cities you can reach from Rome without changing trains or getting up in the dark: two high-speed operators, Italo and Trenitalia, compete on the line, and both run from Roma Termini straight into Napoli Centrale. The train is the obvious choice here, because Naples traffic is intense and the narrow streets of the old town are faster on foot than by car.

What Naples gives you is a different Italy from Rome. The day runs from the Bay of Naples and the Bourbon palaces around Piazza del Plebiscito into the dense old streets of the historic centre, where churches, cloisters and pastry counters sit door to door. Sfogliatella and rum-soaked babà are part of the city's character, and fried pizza or a cone of fried food is lunch on the go. Naples can feel loud and gritty at first, but the historic centre is generally safe for visitors during the day and into the evening.

The price is time on the train: about two and a half hours in total on this plan, and a long walk once you arrive. In return you see the seafront, the royal quarter and the old town in one connected route, which is more than most single cities near Rome offer in a day.

Who this day trip suits

  • First-time visitors to Italy who want to see the south and have only one day to spare for it
  • Food lovers who want to eat their way through Neapolitan pastry and street food between the sights
  • Art and history fans drawn to the Royal Palace, the Cappella Sansevero and the old churches of the centre
  • Families with older children who walk well and no longer need a stroller
  • Travellers who like a lively, busy city more than a quiet hill town

Go if you want a lively, very different city with sea, palaces and street food in one day; if you travel with small children in a stroller or want a calm small town, Orvieto or Assisi will suit you better.

How to get from Rome to Naples by train

Take a direct train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale: it is quick, frequent and drops you on the edge of the centre, so there is no reason to drive. FlixBus also runs coaches from Rome's Tiburtina bus station to Naples, but they take noticeably longer than the train.

Train: Trenitalia

Italo and Trenitalia both run direct trains between Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale throughout the day, with departures in the early morning and steady service into the evening. The fast high-speed trains take about an hour and a quarter, the morning Trenitalia train in this plan a little under an hour and a half, and the slowest direct services up to about three hours. Book online ahead and choose a specific train: the ticket includes a seat reservation and is tied to that operator and that departure, so an Italo ticket does not work on a Trenitalia train and vice versa. Booking early is also how you get the cheaper fares, shown in the cost tool. Make sure your search starts from Roma Termini; trains from Roma Tiburtina or Roma Ostiense exist too, but they are separate searches and mostly slower.

Your Rome to Naples day trip itinerary

Day plan for: Mon, Thu–Sat

Leave Rome early, start the walk at the sea around a quarter past ten and work your way inland, so the day ends in the old town close to the station and the evening train back.

  1. Morning08:05 – 09:18

Take the direct Trenitalia train from Roma Termini shortly after eight; it arrives at Napoli Centrale around a quarter past nine. From Piazza Garibaldi, head to the seafront and Castel dell'Ovo.

Arriving before half past nine gives you the whole day, and the royal quarter with the palace and the opera house fits into the morning.

  2. Tour10:15 – 13:15

Open the tour in the browser at Castel dell'Ovo. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells the stories of the castle on the water, asks you what you want to know and leads you to Piazza del Plebiscito and into the Royal Palace, then to Teatro San Carlo and through the Galleria Umberto I to Castel Nuovo by the port.

The royal quarter sits close together, so the morning is mostly time at the stops, not walking. The opera house can be visited only on a guided tour with set slots, so book a late-morning slot ahead if you want to go inside; tours can be cancelled for rehearsals, and then the guide tells its story from the square.

  3. Lunch13:15 – 14:15

Have lunch after Castel Nuovo, on your way inland to Santa Chiara. A pizzeria or a quick street food lunch of fried pizza or pizza folded in paper both work here; carry euros, because not every pizzeria takes cards.

This is the natural break between the royal quarter and the old town, before one of the longer walks of the day takes you inland. Well-known pizzerias often have long queues, so pick street food if the line is long.

  4. Afternoon14:15 – 17:30

The guide picks up again at Santa Chiara and leads you past the Gesù Nuovo and across Piazza Bellini into the Cappella Sansevero, then past San Gregorio Armeno and finally to the outside of Naples Cathedral. Optional: Scaturchio on Piazza San Domenico, close to the Cappella Sansevero, is the place for babà; budget an extra quarter of an hour.

The old town is compact and best seen on foot. Book the Cappella Sansevero online in advance, because visits there need a reserved slot.

    6. Naples Cathedral, stop 12 on the self-guided walking tour12Naples Cathedral
  5. Return17:30 – 19:40

Leave the cathedral by half past five at the latest, head back to Napoli Centrale (plan around 40 minutes, including the wait for local transport) and keep a quarter of an hour in hand at the station. The Trenitalia train around half past six brings you into Roma Termini at about a quarter to eight.

The tour ends with about half an hour to spare, which you can spend on a sfogliatella at Antico Forno Attanasio near the station without risking the train.

Arrival to return departure: 9 h 12 min. Time for your visit: about 7.5 h.

Realistically you get about seven hours in Naples; if you arrive late, shorten the end of the walk at San Gregorio Armeno and the cathedral, and keep the order of the stops.

A Naples walking tour in one day: from the sea to the Duomo

The walking tour is how you actually see Naples on this day: it runs from Castel dell'Ovo on the seafront through the royal quarter to the port and then into the historic centre, ending at the cathedral. It covers about five and a half kilometres, roughly an hour and twenty minutes of pure walking spread over the day, on city streets and squares. The AI Tour Guide leads it as a conversation, telling the stories of each place and answering whatever you ask along the way.

What a Rome to Naples day trip costs

The train is the biggest part of this day's cost, and it depends mostly on how early you book and which train you pick. The Royal Palace, the guided tour of Teatro San Carlo and Castel Nuovo are preselected because they are the paid visits of the morning; add the Cappella Sansevero or the Archaeological Museum in the cost tool if you plan them, and keep lunch cheap with street food.

Getting back from Naples to Rome

The walk ends at the cathedral, on the side of the old town facing the station, so the way back is straightforward: plan around 40 minutes to Napoli Centrale, including the wait for local transport, and keep a quarter of an hour in hand before your train. Book the return for a specific train in advance; the recommended Trenitalia service gets you into Roma Termini in the early evening, and it runs at the same time every day of the week, Sundays included.

If you are running late, cut San Gregorio Armeno and the cathedral first, since both sit at the end of the walk. If you miss the train you booked, Trenitalia runs further direct trains from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini into the evening, but you need a new ticket, because tickets are tied to one operator and one train.

Questions about the day trip from Rome to Naples

Can I add Pompeii to a day trip from Rome to Naples?

Pompeii and Herculaneum are reached by the Circumvesuviana railway from Napoli Centrale, but the walk already fills the day. Add one of them and you would have to drop most of the old town, so treat it as a separate trip.

Can I fit in the National Archaeological Museum?

It is not on the walking route, so only by giving up the end of the tour, San Gregorio Armeno and the cathedral. It is closed on Tuesdays, and the Farnese Marbles are the part not to miss if you go.

Is the day suitable for children?

With older children who walk well, yes. With a stroller or toddlers the traffic and crowds in the old town make the day hard work.

Do I need cash in Naples?
