Padua is one of the easiest day trips from Venice: the train takes about half an hour, and trains run all day in both directions. Leave mid morning and you still get about 7.5 hours in town, enough to walk from Giotto's chapel to the Basilica of Saint Anthony and back through the old market squares without rushing.

Is a day trip from Venice to Padua worth it?

Yes, for almost anyone with a free day. The ride is so short that travel barely eats into the day, and you need no planning beyond one optional booking. Padua is a working university city, founded as a university town in 1222, and it feels like it: students on bicycles, market stalls under the arcades, aperitivo crowds in the squares in the early evening. After a few days in Venice, that everyday life is the real contrast.

The art is the main reason to go. The Scrovegni Chapel holds Giotto's fresco cycle and the Botanical Garden dates from 1545; both are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Add the Basilica of Saint Anthony, one of the great pilgrimage churches of Italy, and you have a day with more weight than most mainland trips from Venice. The one thing to plan ahead is the chapel interior: entry runs on timed slots that need booking, often well in advance.

Who this day trip suits

  • Art lovers who want to see Giotto's frescoes and the remains of Mantegna's work in the Eremitani church
  • First-time visitors to the Veneto who want an easy mainland day with a short train ride
  • Pilgrims and anyone curious about the Basilica of Saint Anthony
  • Travellers tired of Venice crowds who want a lively student city with everyday markets
  • Budget travellers, since lunch and coffee cost noticeably less than in Venice

Go if you like art, churches or simply a lively Italian town without crowds; if you have already seen Giotto or want Roman ruins, Verona is the better pick.

How to get from Venice to Padua by train

The day is built on an Italo high-speed train from Venezia Mestre, which reaches Padova in about a quarter of an hour; regional Trenitalia trains from Venezia Santa Lucia take about half an hour and are just as good if you are staying in the historic centre. FlixBus also runs coaches from Mestre and Tronchetto, but the train is quicker and more frequent.

Train: Italo

Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains cover the same line in about the same half hour from Santa Lucia, and Italo also runs from Venezia Mestre, which is the train this day plan uses. Seat reservation is compulsory, so book ahead for a specific train; the ticket is bound to that departure. For such a short hop the high-speed train saves little time over a fast regional, so take it when the departure suits your plan, not for speed. Fares are shown in the cost tool.

Another service: Trenitalia Regionale

Regional and Regionale Veloce trains leave from Venezia Santa Lucia, right on the Grand Canal, and stop at Venezia Mestre on the way. The ride to Padova takes about half an hour, a little longer on the slower services, and departures run from early morning until late at night, several per hour for most of the day. There is no seat reservation: buy the ticket before boarding at the station machines, the ticket office or online, and validate a paper ticket in the machine on the platform before you get on. If you forget, find the conductor as soon as you board and say so. When booking, search for Padova, not Padua.

From Padova station, walk south along Corso del Popolo to the Scrovegni Chapel and the Eremitani, keeping a brisk pace through the area right in front of the station. If you prefer to ride, the SIR1 tram links the station with the Eremitani stop, the centre, the Basilica and Prato della Valle, and you can pay by tapping a bank card on board.

Venice to Padua day trip itinerary, hour by hour frame

Day plan for: Tue–Sun

A mid morning train gets you to Padua in time to start at the Scrovegni Chapel, and the walk then runs south to the Basilica and Prato della Valle before swinging back north through the old squares to Ponte Molino.

  1. Morning09:20 – 09:33

Take the Italo train around twenty past nine from Venezia Mestre, which arrives in Padua just after half past nine. Walk or take the tram down Corso del Popolo to the Scrovegni Chapel, the first stop of the tour.

A relaxed start that still leaves about 7.5 hours in town, and the chapel lies on the way from the station into the centre.

  2. Tour10:15 – 12:45

Open the tour in the browser at the Scrovegni Chapel. The AI Tour Guide greets you there, tells you about Giotto and the Scrovegni family, asks what you want to know more about and leads you on to the Church of the Eremitani, the Basilica of Saint Anthony and the Botanical Garden of Padua. You see the chapel from outside unless you have booked a timed slot for the interior.

The Eremitani church closes over midday, so it comes first, and the Botanical Garden is a calm place to end the morning before lunch.

  3. Lunch12:45 – 13:45

Eat after the Botanical Garden of Padua and before Prato della Valle, in the streets between the Basilica and the square. Look for bigoli with duck ragù or risotto with radicchio.

Many churches and smaller sights pause at midday, so this is the natural break, and the afternoon stops reopen or stay open after it.

  4. Afternoon13:45 – 17:30

The guide picks up again at Prato della Valle and leads you north past the University of Padua at Palazzo Bo, into Palazzo della Ragione, across Piazza dei Signori, into the Baptistery of Padua Cathedral and finally to Ponte Molino. After the last stop you have a little over an hour to spare: use it for a coffee at Caffè Pedrocchi near Palazzo Bo or a spritz back on Piazza dei Signori as the students arrive.

The squares come alive in the late afternoon, and the Baptistery's midday break is over by the time you reach it.

    6. Ponte Molino in Padua, stop 10 on the self-guided walking tour10Ponte Molino
  5. Return17:30 – 18:42

Leave Ponte Molino by half past five at the latest and walk or take the tram back to Padua station. The Italo train just before half past six brings you to Venezia Mestre around a quarter to seven.

This leaves time for the walk to the station and a short buffer before a reserved train you cannot simply swap.

Arrival to return departure: 8 h 54 min. Time for your visit: about 7.5 h.

Realistically you get about seven hours in Padua; if you arrive late, keep the order and drop the last stops, the Baptistery and Ponte Molino, rather than rushing the morning.

Padua walking tour in one day

The tour is how you see Padua on this day: ten stops from the Scrovegni Chapel near the station, south to the Basilica of Saint Anthony and Prato della Valle, then back north through the market squares to Ponte Molino. It covers about 4.6 km, roughly an hour of actual walking spread over about five hours with the visits, on flat city streets and under long arcades. The AI Tour Guide leads the whole walk as a conversation, so you hear the story of each place as you stand in front of it.

Venice to Padua day trip cost

The day costs a train ticket each way, three paid entries and lunch: the Botanical Garden, Palazzo della Ragione and the Baptistery are the ones worth paying for on this walk, while the Basilica of Saint Anthony and the squares are free. The Scrovegni Chapel stays an outside stop in this plan because its interior runs on timed slots booked well ahead, and you save on transport by taking a regional train instead of a high-speed one.

Buffer and private guide

For a cheap and good lunch, use the food stalls in the market hall under Palazzo della Ragione, and skip the Urbs Picta card unless you plan to visit several fresco sites, since for most one day visitors it does not pay off.

Getting back from Padua to Venice

The way back is the outward trip in reverse: walk or take the SIR1 tram from Ponte Molino to Padua station and board your train to Venezia Mestre or Santa Lucia. Allow about forty minutes from the last stop to the station plus a quarter of an hour of buffer, especially if you hold a reserved high-speed ticket for a fixed train. With a regional ticket you are free to take any of the frequent departures, which run late into the evening.

If the day runs long, drop the Baptistery and Ponte Molino first. If you miss your reserved train, buy a regional ticket and take the next regional train; they run to Venice throughout the evening and need no reservation.

Questions about the day trip from Venice to Padua

Do I need to book the Scrovegni Chapel in advance?

Yes, if you want to go inside. Entry runs on timed slots that often sell out weeks ahead, so book before anything else and choose a slot with a buffer after your train. Without a booking you see the chapel from outside, and the tour works either way.

Should I take a regional or a high-speed train?

For a half hour hop, a regional train is usually the better choice: no reservation, many departures and a lower fare. The high-speed train is worth it only when its departure suits your plan better.

Can I combine Padua with a stay outside Venice?

Yes. Padua is a practical base for the Veneto, with lower hotel prices than Venice and fast trains into the lagoon city, so some travellers sleep in Padua and visit Venice by day instead.

Is the walk manageable without the tram?

Yes. The whole tour is about an hour of walking spread over the day, on flat streets and often under arcades; the SIR1 tram is there if you get tired, and you pay by tapping a bank card on board.
