A day trip from Venice to Vicenza is an easy one: direct trains take under an hour, the Trenitalia regional train in this plan needs about three quarters of an hour from Venezia Santa Lucia, and you get about 8.5 hours in town. It pays off most if Palladio and his buildings interest you, and it works from Wednesday to Sunday, while on Monday and Tuesday museums along the walk are closed.

Is a day trip from Venice to Vicenza worth it?

Vicenza lies on the main rail line west of Venice, between Padua and Verona, so getting there is simple: direct trains run all day and the faster ones take well under an hour. What you get is a whole town shaped by Andrea Palladio, a UNESCO World Heritage site where his palazzi line the main street, his Teatro Olimpico still stands, and La Rotonda, the villa whose style was copied in country houses far beyond Italy, sits at the edge of town.

It is the opposite of Venice: a wealthy, traditional county town with a fraction of the visitors, where you walk into the sights without queuing, eat lunch on a square and pay less for food. The trade off is that it has neither Venice's drama nor Verona's polish, and its best building lies outside the centre and opens only on certain days. The time on the train is small compared with the hours you get on the ground, so the day stands or falls on choosing the right weekday.

Who this day trip suits

  • Architecture lovers and Palladio fans: the centre and the villa on its edge are his work, in one walk.
  • Travellers who want a day away from the crowds of Venice, in a town where the sights rarely have queues.
  • Budget travellers: eating in Vicenza costs noticeably less than in Venice.
  • Good walkers who enjoy a long day on foot, from the old town up Monte Berico and out to La Rotonda.
  • Anyone who likes an unhurried Italian town where squares belong to locals rather than tour groups.

Go if Palladio and Renaissance architecture interest you and you can travel between Wednesday and Sunday; if buildings are not your thing or you have not yet seen Verona or Padua, start with one of those.

How to get from Venice to Vicenza by train

The train is the way to go: Trenitalia runs direct trains from Venezia Santa Lucia to Vicenza station all day, and Italo adds a few high speed trains from Venezia Mestre. FlixBus also runs a few buses from Venezia Mestre to Vicenza bus station, but the train is faster and far more frequent.

Train: Trenitalia Regionale or Italo

Trains leave Venezia Santa Lucia, the station at the end of the Grand Canal, and also stop at Venezia Mestre. On weekday mornings there are several direct departures an hour, a little fewer at the weekend. The faster direct trains take under an hour, some slower ones about an hour and a quarter. Buy Trenitalia tickets from the machines in the station or online; a paper regional ticket without a fixed train must be validated before you board. Italo runs a handful of trains a day between Venezia Mestre and Vicenza in about half an hour, and the day plan uses one for the way back; it ends at Mestre, so a short regional train takes you across the lagoon to Santa Lucia. An Italo ticket is bought from Italo, is tied to one train and is not valid on Trenitalia, and the same applies the other way round. Fares change with the train and the day; the cost tool shows a typical one.

Your Venice to Vicenza day trip itinerary

Day plan for: Wed–Sun

Take a morning train so the walk can start when the centre's museums open, and let Villa La Rotonda close the walk in the late afternoon.

  1. Morning09:10 – 09:56

Take the Trenitalia regional train from Venezia Santa Lucia shortly after nine, arriving in Vicenza around ten. Walk from the station to Giardino Salvi by Piazza Castello, about a quarter of an hour.

This train lands you as the palazzi open, so you lose no time waiting and start the tour with a full day ahead.

  2. Tour10:15 – 13:15

Open the tour in the browser at Giardino Salvi. The AI Tour Guide greets you, tells you the stories of the places and asks what you want to know as it leads you to Palazzo Barbaran da Porto towards eleven, Chiesa di Santa Corona late in the morning and Palazzo Chiericati shortly after noon.

The first four stops lie within a few minutes of each other, so the morning is all looking and listening rather than walking.

    4. Palazzo Chiericati in Vicenza, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour4Palazzo Chiericati

    Start the Vicenza tour

  3. Lunch13:15 – 14:15

Break for lunch after Palazzo Chiericati and before the Teatro Olimpico. Try baccalà alla vicentina with polenta, bigoli con le sarde, or spunciotti, Vicenza's small bites on bread, with a glass of Colli Berici red.

Palazzo Chiericati and the Teatro Olimpico stand a couple of minutes apart, so you eat between two indoor visits and the town slows down over midday anyway.

  4. Afternoon14:15 – 18:15

The guide picks up at the Teatro Olimpico after two, then takes you past Piazza dei Signori to the Basilica Palladiana around three and along Corso Palladio, which you see in passing. From there it is about half an hour on foot up to Monte Berico, reached around half past four, and another half hour down to Villa Capra La Rotonda, which you see from outside. The tour ends there around half past five, with about three quarters of an hour to spare.

Monte Berico closes over midday, so the walk saves the hill and the villa for the late afternoon, when the centre's museums are already done.

    6. Villa Capra La Rotonda in Vicenza, stop 10 on the self-guided walking tour10Villa Capra La Rotonda
  5. Return18:15 – 19:51

Leave La Rotonda by around a quarter past six and allow around 35 minutes to get back to Vicenza station on foot, plus a quarter of an hour of buffer. Board the Italo train at around a quarter past seven, which reaches Venezia Mestre shortly before eight; from there a short regional train crosses the lagoon to Santa Lucia.

The villa sits outside the centre, so the way back to the station is the longest transfer of the day and needs its own margin.

Arrival to return departure: 9 h 21 min. Time for your visit: about 8.5 h.

Arrival 09:56, tour start 10:15: 15 min to walk to the start, 4 min spare.

You get about eight hours in Vicenza; if your train runs late, shorten the end of the walk by dropping La Rotonda first and then Monte Berico, never the stops in the centre.

A Vicenza walking tour in one day, from Giardino Salvi to La Rotonda

The walk covers 5.7 km and about an hour and a half of pure walking: it starts in Giardino Salvi, crosses the old town past Palladio's palazzi, the Teatro Olimpico and Piazza dei Signori, then leaves the centre for Monte Berico and ends at Villa La Rotonda. The first part is a slow city stroll with long stops; the last two legs are proper half hour walks. The AI Tour Guide leads it as a conversation, so you hear why the buildings look the way they do while you stand in front of them.

What a Venice to Vicenza day trip costs

The day's cost comes from three things: the train fare, which changes with the train you pick, the five paid entrances in the centre from Palazzo Barbaran da Porto to the Basilica Palladiana, and lunch. The cost tool starts with all five entrances because each is a key piece of Palladio's Vicenza, La Rotonda at the end of the walk is seen from outside, and food here costs less than in Venice; the walk back to the station costs nothing.

Getting back from Vicenza to Venice

The way back runs on the same line: the Italo train in the plan takes about half an hour to Venezia Mestre, where a short regional train takes you on to Santa Lucia. The tricky part is not the train but getting from La Rotonda back to the station, so leave the villa with around 35 minutes for that walk plus a quarter of an hour to spare.

If you run late, drop La Rotonda first and then Monte Berico, and go back to the station from Corso Palladio. If you miss the Italo train, your ticket is tied to it, so buy a Trenitalia ticket for one of the later direct trains to Venezia Santa Lucia, which run regularly until the later evening.

Questions about the day trip from Venice to Vicenza

Do I need to book the Teatro Olimpico or other sights in advance?

No. Individual visitors buy tickets at the door, and Vicenza sees so few visitors compared with Venice that queues are rare, so skip the line tickets bring you nothing.

Is there a show inside the Teatro Olimpico?

Yes, a short sound and light show runs several times a day except in April and May. It brings the old stage set to life and is worth waiting a few minutes for.

What should I eat in Vicenza?

The local dish is baccalà alla vicentina, dried cod slowly cooked in milk and white wine and served with polenta. For something lighter, try spunciotti, small bites on bread, around Piazza delle Erbe beneath the Basilica Palladiana, with a Colli Berici red or a Gambellara white.

Is it worth staying in Vicenza for the evening?

Yes, if you can. Once the day visitors leave, the squares fill with locals for the evening stroll and aperitivo, and direct trains back to Venice run until the later evening.
