Your Monterosso al Mare Walking Tour, from Parish to Seafront

  1. 1

    Church of San Giovanni Battista

Church of San Giovanni Battista in Monterosso al Mare, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

Begin at the parish church, because it sets the tone for everything after it. Monterosso al Mare's old town is a place where people live and work, not a stage set, and the Church of San Giovanni Battista is its everyday centre: an active Catholic parish belonging to the Diocese of La Spezia-Sarzana-Brugnato, where the door opens for worshippers first and visitors second.

That arrangement costs you nothing. Admission is free outside services. If a service is under way when you arrive, either wait for it to end or step back out into the lanes and return later; the oratory is so close that you can easily swap the order.

Go in now rather than saving it for the end. This is one of three interiors on the walk, all of them daytime visits, and the route moves steadily away from the old town towards the sea, so there is no natural moment to come back.

From the church door the oratory is just 40 m away, a one minute walk around the corner.

    Oratorio dei Neri

Oratorio dei Neri in Monterosso al Mare, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

The oratory stands so close to the parish church that the two belong together, and that pairing is the point of seeing them back to back. This was the chapel of the Confraternita dei Neri, a lay brotherhood whose full name, Mortis et Orationis, reads like a mission statement: death, and prayer.

Think of the two buildings as two layers of the same town. The parish ran the official worship of Monterosso; around the corner, ordinary townsmen organised as brothers kept a room of their own, with their own devotions and their own duties around death and prayer.

Plan a look rather than a long stay. Entry is free, though it is worth checking the visiting times on the door. It is the lightest chapter of the walk, a short pause between the parish church and the change of scene that follows.

Next comes Aurora Tower, 230 m and about 3 minutes away.

    Aurora Tower

Aurora Tower in Monterosso al Mare, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

Aurora Tower is where the walk changes character. This 16th century fortification stands on the line that separates the old town from Fegina, so passing it means changing districts, not just streets. Everything before it has been parish and brotherhood; everything after it leads towards the seafront.

The tower's second life is the surprise. Its interior is now a restaurant and cocktail bar, which makes it the one stop on the route where a defensive monument and a dinner table share a front door.

Know how it works before you arrive. The exterior is free and can be viewed around the clock from the public paths and viewpoints. Inside, it runs as a private venue for food and cocktails, with à la carte prices or terrace packages. So the choice is simple: admire the walls for free and walk on, or plan a drink or meal here, perhaps at the end of your day.

The Capuchin convent is only 140 m further, about 2 minutes on foot.

Open 24/7 exterior viewing; restaurant kitchen 12:30–22:00, cocktails 12:30–22:30

Capuchin Convent and Church of San Francesco

Capuchin Convent and Church of San Francesco in Monterosso al Mare, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

After the tower, the Capuchins are the counterweight: a working convent, known locally as the Convento dei Frati Cappuccini, together with the church of San Francesco. Both welcome visitors free of charge, every day from morning to evening.

Services come first here too, so time your visit to the church outside worship. Give the place more than a passing glance. The grounds are part of the visit rather than a border around it, and walking through them slowly is as much a part of the experience as the church itself.

This is your last interior of the day; from here on everything is open air and open access. If you want a quiet moment before the seafront, take it now.

Then comes the longest leg of the route: 840 m and 11 minutes out to the Giant, past Fegina beach along the way.

    Il Gigante

Il Gigante in Monterosso al Mare, stop 5 on the self-guided walking tour

The walk ends with its biggest figure. On the rocks at Fegina beach stands a monumental concrete Neptune, Il Gigante, the Giant, rising right at the water's edge. You can see him for free at any hour of the day or night.

This is a good place to finish. The beach is right there and there is no further leg to walk, so let the tour simply dissolve into the seafront instead of turning back on principle.

Before you leave him, look back the way you came. Parish church, brotherhood oratory, tower, convent: in a little over a kilometre you have moved from the town's official worship and its private brotherhoods to a fortress turned bar and finally to the open sea.

Shorter Ways Through Monterosso al Mare

The route is compact, but it splits naturally into an old town half and a seafront half. Pick the one that fits your time.

Old town and interiors only

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4

For anyone who came for the churches rather than the beach. Parish church, brotherhood oratory, Aurora Tower and the Capuchins add up to 410 m and 6 minutes of walking. All three interiors are free; the tower you see from outside unless you stop for a drink or a meal.

Tower to the Giant

Stops: 3, 4, 5

For beach days with a bit of culture on the way. Start at Aurora Tower, look into the Capuchin church, then take the long leg out to the Giant: 980 m and 13 minutes on foot, nothing to pay, and you finish right at the water.

How Long Does the Walk Through Monterosso al Mare Take?

The pure walking time is 17 minutes for 1.2 km, and most of it sits in one stretch: the 840 m from the Capuchins out to the Giant. The first three legs together take only 6 minutes, so the old town part is really a sequence of doors a minute or two apart.

With unhurried visits to the parish church, the oratory and the Capuchin convent, plus a pause at the tower and at the Giant, you are looking at about an hour and a quarter. The old town variant fits into roughly 45 minutes with the interiors; the tower to Giant variant takes about half an hour including the convent.

Before You Set Off in Monterosso

  • Start: The Church of San Giovanni Battista is the recommended start, but you can pick up the route at any stop.
  • End: Il Gigante, on the rocks at Fegina beach. The route does not loop back, so there is no return leg to plan.
  • When to go: Any day works. Start in the morning or early afternoon if you want to see the interiors of the parish church, the oratory and the convent, and visit the churches outside service times.
  • Cost: Nothing. All interiors are free, and the tower and the Giant can be viewed from outside at any hour. Only eating or drinking inside Aurora Tower costs money.

What the AI Tour Guide Adds Between Church and Giant

On a route this short, the AI Tour Guide is less about getting you there and more about what you notice on the way. It welcomes you at the parish church, tells the stories of each place as a conversation, asks what caught your eye and remembers it, so the talk at the Capuchins builds on what interested you at the oratory. Ask it what the brothers of the Neri actually did in their chapel, or who gave Fegina its concrete Neptune, and interrupt whenever you like. It starts with 100 free credits; after that you choose between this tour all-inclusive for €19.99 with no time limit, or €5 per hour.

A Real Conversation A voice AI Tour Guide greets you, leads the whole route, and tells the stories and facts as you walk, asking what you want to see and keeping a real conversation going. Not a recording you press play on.
Map Navigation Follow the route on the map and walk at your own pace. You choose where to start and when to move to the next stop.
Ask Anything Curious about a building you pass? Ask your AI Tour Guide on the spot and the conversation carries on.

Questions Before You Walk to the Giant

Can I go inside Aurora Tower without eating or drinking?

The interior works as a private restaurant and cocktail bar, so going in means ordering or booking a terrace package. The exterior is free to see at any time.

Can I have a drink in Aurora Tower in the evening?
