Via dell'Amore Trailhead
The Via dell'Amore, Via de l'Amô in the Ligurian dialect, is a pedestrian path cut straight into the cliff about thirty metres above the sea. In a little over a kilometre it links Riomaggiore and Manarola. It looks less like a trail than a broad paved walkway with a railing, which makes it the gentlest stretch of the whole coastal path. Keep glancing at the rock beside you and the water below rather than only ahead: the point of this walk is that you are moving through the cliff itself.
Its recent history is a run of closures. A landslide in 2012 shut the path; a short section reopened in 2015, and the full length only reopened on 26 July 2024. At the end of 2024 another landslide partly damaged a tunnel and the protective nets, and the path closed again. It reopened on 14 February 2025, Valentine's Day, a fitting date for a path named for love. Worldwide fame and UNESCO status have not made this rock any more stable, and that is worth remembering as you walk.
Entry comes with the Cinque Terre Trekking Card, which includes the Via dell'Amore. Is it worth paying? If you want one experience in Manarola that you cannot get from a viewpoint, it is this one: the cliff and the sea at arm's length. If budget matters more, skip it and start at the harbour; everything after this point costs nothing.
From the trailhead the route covers 1040 m, about 14 minutes of pure walking, and the path delivers you straight into Manarola Harbour.
