Your Amalfi Walking Tour Stop by Stop, from Shipyard to Paper Mill

  1. 1

    Porto di Amalfi

Porto di Amalfi, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

Start at the water, because Amalfi did. The harbour and its promenade are open around the clock, with no gate and no ticket, so this is the place to get your bearings before the town pulls you inland. Amalfi was a maritime republic, and everything you see on this walk, from the shipyard to the cathedral to the paper mills, grew out of what came and went through this shoreline.

Timing matters here more than anywhere else on the route. On weekdays in July and August, ferries and buses from Naples bring day visitors in, up to two thousand a day at the peak, and the streets ahead fill up from late morning. Stand here early and the town is nearly yours.

From the harbour it is 780 m, about 11 min, to the old shipyard of the Republic, the longest leg of the morning.

    Arsenale della Repubblica di Amalfi

Arsenale della Repubblica di Amalfi, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

The name says it all: this was the shipyard of the Republic of Amalfi, where the fleet that carried its trade was built. Today the building is a museum of exactly that chapter, the town's years as a sea power.

Whether to go in is a budget call, and a cheap one: it is the lowest-priced ticket on the route. If you want to understand how a small coastal town ran a republic on ships, go in. If you are only paying for one interior today, keep walking and spend it on the cathedral instead.

The Piazza del Duomo is only 80 m away, a one-minute walk.

    Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo in Amalfi, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

Every visitor to Amalfi ends up on this square, which is both its charm and its problem. It costs nothing and never closes, and the cathedral stands right on it, so this is where you take in the facade before deciding on a ticket.

The square is paved in stone and enclosed by buildings, with almost no shade. Between noon and three in July and August it reaches up to 37 degrees, so in high summer treat it as a morning and evening place. Crowds follow the same clock: on weekdays in July and August the square is busiest with day visitors between 10 am and 3 pm, while before 9 am it is usually calm and good for photographs.

The entrance to the Duomo di Sant'Andrea is 50 m away, one minute on foot.

    Duomo di Sant'Andrea

Duomo di Sant'Andrea in Amalfi, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

The cathedral is dedicated to the Apostle Saint Andrew, whose relics are kept here. It was begun in the 9th and 10th centuries and has been added to and redecorated so often that its layers read like a timeline: Arab-Norman, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque work, and finally the Norman-Arab-Byzantine facade you see from the square, which dates from the 19th century. Since 1986 it has been the seat of the Diocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni.

Inside, the complex includes the 9th-century Basilica of the Crucifix, and from there you go down into the Crypt of Saint Andrew, where the relics lie. Local tradition holds that a liquid called manna, an oil of the saints, seeps from the place of the relics and is collected in a glass during celebrations twice a year.

Entering to pray is free; the tourist visit runs through the Complesso Monumentale ticket, with a reduced rate available. If you buy only one ticket in Amalfi, this is the one: the basilica and the crypt are the heart of the town's history.

The Cloister of Paradise is 60 m away, a one-minute walk.

    Cloister of Paradise

Cloister of Paradise in Amalfi, stop 5 on the self-guided walking tour

The Chiostro del Paradiso, as it is called locally, keeps the same opening hours as the cathedral, and its listed price matches the Complesso Monumentale ticket. Ask at the desk whether your cathedral ticket already covers it, so you do not pay twice.

It suits visitors who want a slower moment after the crypt before leaving the cathedral behind. If you are short on time, this is the interior to drop.

Next comes the second long leg: 660 m, about 11 min, away from the square and into the Valle dei Mulini, the inner part of town.

    Museo della Carta

Museo della Carta in Amalfi, stop 6 on the self-guided walking tour

The route ends in a former paper mill. Amalfi's families made a hand-made paper known as carta bambagina, and in 1969 Nicola Milano, the mill's owner and a member of one of those families, turned his mill into a museum. The machines and tools of the old mill have been restored and still work, and another floor holds photographs, documentary prints and a library on paper-making, a reminder of how much this craft meant to the maritime republic.

This is the interior that best rewards the extra money. Besides the standard ticket there is a guided visit that costs a little more, lasts under 20 minutes and includes watching a sheet of paper being made by hand in front of you. If you are travelling with children or simply like seeing how things are made, take the guided version.

Here the walk is complete: you have followed Amalfi from its harbour to the valley that supplied its trade.

Shorter Ways Through Amalfi

Not every visitor wants three tickets and three hours. These versions keep the route's order and simply drop what you do not need.

Sea republic and cathedral, ending on the square

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

For day visitors who want the maritime story and the cathedral but no detour inland. You walk 970 m, 14 min in total, and finish at the Cloister of Paradise. You pay for two interiors: the Arsenale and the cathedral complex.

Cathedral and paper, starting on the square

Stops: 3, 4, 5, 6

For anyone who reaches the Piazza del Duomo directly and cares more about saints and craftsmanship than ships. You walk 770 m, 13 min, and pay for the cathedral complex and the paper museum, a little more there if you want to watch a sheet being made.

The whole route, no tickets

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

For a tight budget or a short stopover. You walk all 1.6 km in 25 min, see every building from outside, and can still step into the cathedral to pray for free. Allow a little under an hour.

How Long This Amalfi Tour Takes, With and Without Tickets

The pure walking time is 25 min, and almost half of it comes in two legs: 11 min from the harbour to the Arsenale and 11 min from the Cloister of Paradise up to the paper museum. The middle of the route, from the Arsenale across the square to the cathedral and cloister, is three short hops of a minute each.

With every interior, a realistic morning looks like this: harbour at 9:40, Arsenale from 10:06, the square at 10:37, the cathedral at 10:48, the cloister at 11:19, and the Museo della Carta at 12:00, finishing around 12:45. That is roughly three hours, with half an hour each in the Arsenale, the cathedral and the cloister and 45 minutes at the paper mill.

The sea republic and cathedral version takes a little over two hours, as does the cathedral and paper version starting on the square. Walking the whole route without tickets fits into under an hour.

Before You Set Off from the Harbour

  • Start and finish: The recommended start is Porto di Amalfi, but you can join the route at any stop. It ends at the Museo della Carta in the Valle dei Mulini, 11 min on foot from the Cloister of Paradise.
  • When to go: A morning start works best: you reach the paid stops once they are open, and in July and August you are through the Piazza del Duomo before the midday heat and crowds.
  • Tickets: The Arsenale, the cathedral visit through the Complesso Monumentale, the Cloister of Paradise and the Museo della Carta each charge admission. The first three offer reduced tickets, and the paper museum also has a guided visit. If you only pay for one interior, make it the cathedral.
  • Navigation: Open the free route in your browser: the map and GPS navigation guide you from stop to stop, and the AI Tour Guide can join whenever you like.

What the AI Tour Guide Adds Between Harbour and Paper Mill

Amalfi's stops tell one story: a republic that lived from the sea, and the trades and faith that grew with it. The AI Tour Guide leads you through that story as a conversation. It greets you at the harbour, tells you about the merchants who ran this coast, asks whether ships, saints or craftsmanship pull you in, and remembers your answer at the cathedral and at the mill. You can interrupt it at any point, for example to ask how a sheet of cotton paper travelled from these mills into Amalfi's trade, or what daily life looked like for the men in the shipyard. You start with 100 free credits; after that you choose between this tour all-inclusive for €19.99 with no time limit, or €5 per hour.

A Real Conversation A voice AI Tour Guide greets you, leads the whole route, and tells the stories and facts as you walk, asking what you want to see and keeping a real conversation going. Not a recording you press play on.
