Your Bari Walking Tour Through the Old Town, Stop by Stop

  1. 1

    Lungomare Araldo di Crollalanza

Lungomare Araldo di Crollalanza in Bari, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

Begin facing the water. The Lungomare Araldo di Crollalanza is Bari's seafront promenade, open around the clock and free, and it is the last you will see of the sea until the walk brings you back towards it at the very end. Take a moment here before you turn inland.

One thing on this stretch matters more than any opening time on the route: there is no shade between 11:00 and 16:00. That is why this walk starts in the morning. Set off early and the promenade is a pleasure; leave it until midday and it decides for you that the walk should have started sooner.

There is one exception to the morning rule. On 8 May, at around 17:00, the Frecce Tricolori fly their annual air display over the sea off this coast in honour of Saint Nicholas, the city's patron saint. The promenade between the old port and Piazza del Ferrarese becomes the standing room for it, and the crowd runs beyond 200,000 people, so come an hour early if you want a place. The same day the statue of the saint goes out onto the water in procession, and fireworks over the sea close the festival on the night of 9 May.

From here it is 910 m and about 13 minutes into Bari Vecchia, the old town, where the lanes narrow and the city changes character completely.

    Strada delle Orecchiette

Strada delle Orecchiette in Bari, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

You are now in the narrow lanes of Bari Vecchia, and on the stretch known as Arco Basso the old town makes its pasta in public. Women sit at their doorsteps shaping orecchiette by hand, the small ear-shaped pasta that gives this lane its name. Watch the quick flick of the knife and thumb that turns a strip of dough into one piece after another.

The lane is always open and costs nothing to walk through. The pasta making, though, is the women's working day, not a show with a posted schedule. Mornings are your best chance, which is another reason this route starts early. If you can choose your day, let this window anchor your morning.

On a quiet day there may be nothing to see but the lane itself. If that happens, walk through without regret and give the extra time to the churches later on. Either way, be respectful: these are doorsteps and homes, not a stage.

The Castello Svevo is only 210 m away, about three minutes on foot, on the edge of the old town.

    Castello Svevo

Castello Svevo in Bari, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

The Castello Svevo, officially the Castello Normanno-Svevo, is the Norman and Swabian castle of Bari, and its double name tells you that it belongs to two ruling eras of the city. It stands on the margins of the old town, a fortress at the threshold between Bari Vecchia and the rest of the city. In the local dialect people call it simply u Castídde, the castle, as if there could be no other.

This is the only stop on the route with an admission fee; you pay at the ticket desk. If you enjoy fortifications and want to understand how Bari defended itself, the visit inside is worth it. If you are short on time or on budget, the outside alone gives you a strong sense of its mass, and you lose nothing on the rest of the walk.

From the castle the cathedral is 280 m away, about four minutes on foot, back into the old town.

    Cattedrale di San Sabino

Cattedrale di San Sabino in Bari, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

The Cattedrale di San Sabino is the cathedral of Bari, officially the Basilica cattedrale metropolitana di San Sabino. Locals also know it by the name of Santa Maria Assunta. It is the seat of the Catholic archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto and a national monument of Italy, the church where the city's bishop has his chair.

Entry is free. Even a short visit is worthwhile: this is the church of the diocese, and it gives you a point of comparison for the Basilica di San Nicola a few minutes further on.

The basilica is 340 m away, about five minutes on foot. On the way you pass the Antico Caffè del Carmine, a quiet spot in the old town lanes.

    Basilica di San Nicola

Basilica di San Nicola in Bari, stop 5 on the self-guided walking tour

In the heart of Bari Vecchia stands the Basilica di San Nicola, the church that makes Bari a place of pilgrimage. It is one of the most significant examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture and one of the main places of ecumenism between the Christian churches, where believers of different traditions meet.

Its status is unusual. It is a pontifical basilica, which means that the Holy See itself decides which religious order runs it. That arrangement dates from 1929 and the Lateran Pacts: the Italian state took over all the basilica's property, gave up its 'palatinity', the king's direct control over the life of the clergy, and handed the jurisdiction to the Holy See.

In 1951 the chapter of canons that had served the church since the first half of the 12th century came to an end, and the basilica was entrusted to the Dominican Order. The Dominicans still serve here today and pay particular attention to its ecumenical role.

Entry is free. Give it real time; for most visitors this is the highlight of the route. Then walk 290 m, about four minutes, to Piazza Mercantile.

    Piazza Mercantile

Piazza Mercantile in Bari, stop 6 on the self-guided walking tour

The name does the explaining: Piazza Mercantile is the merchants' square, the old town's trading floor. After two churches in quick succession, this is your breathing space, open at all hours and free.

Nothing here asks for a ticket or a schedule. Pause, look up at the buildings around the square and save your appetite for the end of the walk. The final stop, Piazza del Ferrarese, is only 150 m away, about two minutes on foot.

    Piazza del Ferrarese

Piazza del Ferrarese in Bari, stop 7 on the self-guided walking tour

The walk ends on Piazza del Ferrarese, and the square works two shifts. In the morning it belongs to the fish trade: the trader sells straight from the square and packs up when the fish runs out. The early hours are when octopus, cuttlefish and mussels are at their best and cheapest, so if the fish market is what you are after, come back on another day first thing in the morning.

In the evening the square sets the old town's table, with good restaurants around it. Arriving here at the end of a morning walk, you may want to return later for dinner.

If you are in Bari in December, the city's Christmas tree stands on this square, and the seasonal market runs along the Muraglia in the old town.

The nicest way home is along the water: the seafront promenade runs between the old port and this square, so you close the day by the sea instead of retracing the lanes. This is where you stop walking.

Shorter Ways to Walk Bari Vecchia

The full route is compact, but you can trim it to fit your morning, your budget or your energy.

Old town only

Stops: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

For anyone already staying inside Bari Vecchia or arriving in the afternoon heat: skip the promenade and begin at the orecchiette lane. About 1.3 km and 18 minutes of walking; the castle is the only ticket, and you can admire it from outside if you prefer.

Churches and squares

Stops: 4, 5, 6, 7

For a short, free visit focused on the two great churches: begin at the cathedral and finish on Piazza del Ferrarese. About 780 m and 11 minutes on foot, no entry fees at all.

Full route, no tickets

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

For walkers on a budget or anyone who would rather skip the castle: walk every stop, see the Castello Svevo from outside and go into both churches for free. 2.2 km and 30 minutes of walking.

How Long Does This Bari Tour Take with the Castle and Basilicas?

The walking itself takes 30 minutes. The time goes on what you do along the way: around 20 minutes in the orecchiette lane, 45 minutes inside the castle, 25 in the cathedral, 40 in the Basilica di San Nicola and 10 on Piazza Mercantile add up to roughly three hours in total.

A sample morning: leave the Lungomare at 08:30, reach the pasta makers at 08:43, then head into the castle, and you arrive at the cathedral around 09:55, at San Nicola around 10:25 and on Piazza del Ferrarese around 11:20. The old town variant takes about two and a half hours with the castle; the churches and squares variant fits into roughly 90 minutes.

Common Questions About Walking Bari

Can I visit the churches early in the morning?

Yes. Both the Basilica di San Nicola and the cathedral open early, so an early start lets you see both before the late morning.

Can I do the walk in the evening instead?

Yes, with a trade-off. The two churches work well for an evening walk, but you will have to see the castle from outside, and the pasta makers will be done for the day.

Yes. When you reach Piazza del Ferrarese, the GPS navigation in your browser can lead you back to the Lungomare if you ask it to.

Is the tour really free?

Yes. The whole tour is free: the route, the interactive map and the navigation cost you nothing. Only the voice AI Tour Guide is optional and paid: you test it with 100 free credits, then you pay either €5 per hour or €19.99 for this whole tour, with no time limit.
