Bad Gastein Waterfall
The Gasteiner Ache drops right through the middle of town, about 340 m in three stages, and it is the reason Bad Gastein looks the way it does. Stand on the stone bridge: it was built in 1840 and widened in 1927, and it gives you the water at full noise beneath your feet. Painters and poets made the falls one of the best known in Austria long before anyone thought of postcards.
The river begins far up in the Hohe Tauern National Park, where the Anlaufbach and the Naßfelder Ache join, and it leaves the Gastein valley to flow into the Salzach. If the falls look thinner than in old paintings, that is real: since 1980 a small power plant in Böckstein has drawn off part of the flow. It costs nothing to stand here, day or night, so give it a few unhurried minutes.
From the falls the Gastein Promenade leads off along the slope; you need only 60 m and a minute to reach the facade of Hotel Straubinger.
