Your Montreux Walking Tour, Place by Place Along the Lake

  1. 1

    Saint-Vincent Church

Saint-Vincent Church in Montreux, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

Temple Saint-Vincent is the historic Reformed parish church of Montreux and the quietest place on this walk. That is exactly why it makes a good start: before the lakefront and the castle, you get a moment of calm and a view over the whole layout of the route.

Head for the viewing terrace first. It is free, needs no ticket, and it is the one point where you can take in the town and the shore before you commit to the walk along the water. Spend a few minutes here working out where you are going.

The interior is a bonus, not a plan. The parish publishes no visiting hours for tourists, and apart from the regular Sunday services the doors open when they open. If you find them open, go in; if not, the terrace has already given you what you came for.

From here the route heads down to the lake, a 15 min walk of 1080 m. Enjoy the quiet while it lasts: the next stop is bronze, famous and never closed.

    Freddie Mercury Statue

Freddie Mercury Statue in Montreux, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

On the Place du Marché, right on the lakeside promenade, Freddie Mercury faces Lake Geneva three metres tall in bronze. The Czech sculptor Irena Sedlecká caught him in a pose from the Magic Tour concert at Wembley in 1986: uniform-style jacket, right arm raised with a clenched fist, gaze tilted slightly down, a microphone stand in his left hand.

Mercury had a close bond with Montreux. He came back again and again, among other things to record several Queen albums at the Mountain Studios, and he had a home here, the Duck House. Near that house a small draft version of the statue once stood for a while, and that model is the figure you see on the cover of the 1995 album Made in Heaven.

The finished statue was unveiled on 25 November 1996. Mercury's family were there, along with Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen, the opera singer Montserrat Caballé and Claude Nobs, founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival. It is a guest list that says a lot about how the town and the singer saw each other.

If you are here on the first weekend of September, expect company: since 2001 the statue has been a fixed point of the Freddie Mercury Montreux Memorial Day, when fans gather in town every year. For a photo, stand on the lake side and you get Freddie and the water together.

Now comes the longest stretch of the route: 3070 m along the shore, about 41 min, to Chillon Castle.

    Chillon Castle

Chillon Castle in Montreux, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

Chillon sits on its own small island, a steep oval of limestone pushing out into Lake Geneva on the narrow shore between Montreux and Villeneuve. It is among the most visited medieval castles in Europe, and from the shoreline approach you will see why: walls rising straight out of the water, joined to land only by a short bridge.

The position was the whole point. Chillon guarded the passage between the Vaud Riviera, with its roads north towards Germany and France, and the Rhône valley, the quick route to Italy. Whoever held the rock could control traffic and trade on the road to the Great Saint Bernard Pass and charge a toll. A square keep stood here already in the 11th century, though who ordered it built is still an open question.

By 1150 the castle was in the hands of the House of Savoy; a charter from that year lets the Cistercian monks of Hautcrêt pass freely. From the mid 12th century it served as summer residence for the Counts of Savoy, who kept a fleet of ships on the lake. Count Peter II expanded it greatly in 1248 and again in 1266 and 1267. The Bernese took the castle in 1536 and held it until 1798; today it belongs to the canton of Vaud and is listed as a Swiss Cultural Property of National Significance.

Is it worth going in? If you have walked this far, yes. It is the one paid entry on the route, and the layered story of Savoy, Bern and Vaud only makes sense once you are inside the walls. Arriving late morning leaves you plenty of time.

This is where the route ends. If you still have energy and a free day ahead, the lake towns of Vevey and Lausanne make natural next walks.

Shorter Ways to Walk the Montreux Route

The route is short, but the long leg to the castle is where the time goes. Pick the version that fits your afternoon.

The full walk to the castle

Stops: 1, 2, 3

For anyone with half a day and an interest in history: 56 min of walking in total, 15 min down to the statue and 41 min along the shore. The only ticket you need is for Chillon Castle.

Lakefront and castle only

Stops: 2, 3

For visitors who arrive by the lake and want the headline sights: start at the statue and walk 41 min along the shore to Chillon. The castle is the only paid entry.

Town and Freddie in under an hour

Stops: 1, 2

For a short stay or a Queen fan with limited time: the terrace and the statue, linked by a 15 min walk. Nothing on this version costs anything.

How Long This Montreux Tour Takes, With and Without Chillon

The walking itself takes 56 min. Add a short pause on the church terrace, time at the statue for photos, and a proper castle visit, and three hours is a realistic total. Start at 10:00, leave the terrace at 10:15, spend a quarter of an hour with Freddie from 10:30, and you reach the castle gate at 11:26.

The lakefront and castle variant fits into about two and a half hours with the castle visit. The town and statue version takes well under an hour, including the 15 min walk.

Before You Set Out in Montreux

  • Start and finish: Saint-Vincent Church is the recommended start, but you can join the route at any stop. It ends at Chillon Castle, not where it began.
  • Best timing: Almost any day works. Go in the morning so the castle is not a race against last entry, which comes earlier outside the summer.
  • Costs: The terrace and the statue are free. Chillon Castle charges admission for adults and children.
  • Sunday mornings: Saint-Vincent holds regular Sunday services, so if you find the doors open then, step quietly or come back later.

What the AI Tour Guide Adds Between the Church and the Castle

The 41 min shoreline walk is the heart of this route, and it is long enough for a real conversation. The AI Tour Guide greets you at the start, tells the stories of each place as you arrive, asks what caught your interest and follows that thread: the Queen years in Montreux for one walker, the Savoy counts and their lake fleet for another. Ask it what daily life was like for the Bernese garrison, or which Queen songs grew out of the Mountain Studios sessions, and interrupt whenever you like. The route and the GPS stay free; the guide is optional.

A Real Conversation A voice AI Tour Guide greets you, leads the whole route, and tells the stories and facts as you walk, asking what you want to see and keeping a real conversation going. Not a recording you press play on.
Map Navigation Follow the route on the map and walk at your own pace. You choose where to start and when to move to the next stop.
Ask Anything Curious about a building you pass? Ask your AI Tour Guide on the spot and the conversation carries on.

Common Questions Before You Walk

What does the name Chillon mean?

It is thought to come from a Waldensian dialect word for a flat stone or platform. The Latin form Castrum Quilonis, recorded from 1195, would then mean a castle built on a rock platform, which is exactly what you see.

When is the best time of day to visit Chillon in winter?

In the morning. Last entry comes earlier in winter than in summer, so an early start keeps the castle from turning into a race.

Can I visit the Freddie Mercury statue at night?

Yes. It stands in the open on the lakefront, is accessible at any hour and costs nothing.

Is Montreux a good base for walks in other lake towns?

Yes. Vevey is only 7 km away and has its own walking route, and Lausanne makes an easy second day on Lake Geneva.

Is the tour really free?

Yes. The whole tour is free: the route, the interactive map and the navigation cost you nothing. Only the voice AI Tour Guide is optional and paid: you test it with 100 free credits, then you pay either €5 per hour or €19.99 for this whole tour, with no time limit. Admission to one of the 3 stops is not included: Chillon Castle charges its own entry fee.

Do I need to download an app?

No. Everything runs in your phone browser. Open the route and start walking, no download and no sign-up required.

Do I need to book the walking tour in advance?

No booking needed. This self-guided tour is available anytime. Open the route in your browser and start walking. The AI Tour Guide works instantly, no app, no reservation required.

What languages is the AI Tour Guide available in?

The AI Tour Guide speaks 13 languages, so you take the tour in your own language and can switch at any time.

Can I skip stops or change the route?

Yes. Skip any stop, spend extra time at places you like, or start the route from any point. It is your walk, you set the pace.
