Your Annecy Walking Tour in Five Stops

  1. 1

    Rue Sainte-Claire

Rue Sainte-Claire in Annecy, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

Rue Sainte-Claire is an ordinary public street in the old town, and that is exactly why it makes a good start: no ticket, no gate, no opening hours. Whether you turn up at seven in the morning or eleven at night, you are in the right place. Take a few minutes to get your bearings and to look around; the street already gives you something to photograph before the route has really begun.

Annecy keeps its two landmark buildings up high and its famous waterside view down on the lake, and this walk reads the town in that order: the castle first, the basilica higher still, then the long descent to the lake and the canal. From here it is 300 m, about 5 minutes, up to Annecy Castle.

    Annecy Castle

Annecy Castle, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

The castle began as a fortress in the 12th century and was reshaped again and again, above all by the Dukes of Savoy in the 1430s, the 1480s, the 1530s and the 1570s, and later by the Savoie-Nemours branch. It was the residence of the Counts of Geneva before it passed to the Dukes of Savoie-Nemours, which is why its walls show so many building periods at once.

Since 1953 the castle has belonged to the town, which restored it and turned it into a museum. Go in if you like history and want to see the place from within its own walls; plan about an hour. If you are short on time or travelling on a tight budget, the outside and the hilltop position already tell much of the story.

From the castle you keep climbing: 670 m, about 11 minutes, to the Basilique de la Visitation.

Winter (1 Oct – 31 May): Mon, Wed–Sun 10:00–12:30 and 14:00–17:30 | summer (1 Jun – 30 Sep): Mon, Wed–Sun 10:30–18:00 | Tue closed. Individual Mondays after free Sundays additionally closed. Last admission 45 min before closing.

    Basilique de la Visitation

Basilique de la Visitation in Annecy, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

The basilica stands on the Crêt du Maure, the first spur of the Semnoz mountain, and dominates Annecy so clearly that you can pick it out from kilometres around. For the town it is the symbol of a proud religious past, and after the castle it is the second of the two buildings that watch over Annecy from above.

Entry is free and the church opens every day, so there is no reason to skip it: even fifteen minutes inside is worth the climb, and anyone who walked up from the castle has earned the pause.

Now comes the longest leg, 1170 m and about 17 minutes, all the way down to the lake. On the way you pass the church of Saint-François-de-Sales before reaching the Pont des Amours.

    Pont des Amours

Pont des Amours in Annecy, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

The Pont des Amours is a footbridge on the edge of the lake, right where the Vassé canal begins. Its official name is the Passerelle du Jardin public, but locals have long called it the Lovers' Bridge: it connects the Pâquier with the Jardins de l'Europe, where couples used to slip away for some peace and privacy.

The bridge marks one of the two places where lake water flows into the town; the other is the Thiou. It is free and open at any hour, so linger as long as you like on the water side of the walk.

From the bridge it is 500 m, about 7 minutes, to the Palais de l'Île, which sits on that second waterway.

    Palais de l'Île

Palais de l'Île in Annecy, stop 5 on the self-guided walking tour

The Palais de l'Île, also spelled Palais de l'Isle, is a 12th century fortified house built on a small island formed by the Thiou and reworked many times since. Over the centuries it served above all as a prison, and that past is what you can still walk through today.

Inside, a permanent exhibition covers the architecture and heritage of the Annecy area, and you can visit the old courtrooms, the prisoners' cells and dungeons, and the former chapel. It is worth the ticket for anyone curious about how justice and imprisonment worked here; about 40 minutes is enough.

This is where the walk ends, in the middle of the water at the heart of the old town. If you want to return to Rue Sainte-Claire, the GPS navigation in your browser will lead you back.

Shorter ways to walk Annecy

The route splits neatly into a hilltop half and a waterside half, so you can do one, the other, or the whole thing without buying a single ticket.

Castle and basilica only

Stops: 1, 2, 3

For history lovers with a morning or afternoon to spare. From Rue Sainte-Claire to the basilica it is 16 minutes of walking; the only ticket is for Annecy Castle, and the basilica is free.

Lake and canal only

Stops: 4, 5

For anyone who mainly wants the water. The Pont des Amours and the Palais de l'Île are 7 minutes apart on foot; the Palais museum is the only admission, and the bridge is free at any hour.

The full route without tickets

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

For a tight budget or a Tuesday, when both museums are shut. You walk all 41 min, see the castle and the Palais from outside, step into the free basilica, and spend nothing at all.

How Long This Annecy Walk Really Takes

The pure walking time is 41 min. Seen from outside, with a look into the basilica, the whole route takes about an hour and a half. With an hour in Annecy Castle and around 40 minutes in the Palais de l'Île it grows to roughly three hours. The castle and basilica variant needs about an hour without the museum, the waterside variant about half an hour.

Both museums keep the same timetable, so one plan covers them both. An afternoon start works well: leave Rue Sainte-Claire at 14:00 and you reach the castle at 14:15, the basilica around 15:26, the bridge around 15:58 and the Palais de l'Île around 16:15. In summer you can also start in the morning and walk straight into the castle once it has opened.

Before you set off in Annecy

  • Start and finish: The recommended start is Rue Sainte-Claire, but you can begin at any stop. The walk ends at the Palais de l'Île, not where it began; the GPS navigation in your browser can take you back to Rue Sainte-Claire if you need to return.
  • Best day: If you want to go inside, pick a day when Annecy Castle and the Palais de l'Île are both open; they keep the same timetable, so you can plan them together.
  • Costs: The route itself is free. Annecy Castle and the Palais de l'Île charge admission; the basilica, the bridge and the street cost nothing.

What the AI Tour Guide adds on the castle hill and the canal

On this route the way is short and easy to follow; what fills it is eight centuries of counts, dukes, prisoners and pilgrims. The AI Tour Guide greets you on Rue Sainte-Claire, tells the stories of each place as you reach it, asks whether the castle's rulers or the Palais's prisoners interest you more, and remembers your answer when you arrive at the water. Things this route sketch leaves open, like who the Counts of Geneva actually were or what a hearing in the Palais courtrooms looked like, are where the conversation goes deeper, and you can cut in whenever something catches your attention.

A Real Conversation A voice AI Tour Guide greets you, leads the whole route, and tells the stories and facts as you walk, asking what you want to see and keeping a real conversation going. Not a recording you press play on.

Common Questions About Walking Annecy

If I only have time for one museum, castle or Palais de l'Île?

Pick the castle if you want the big story of the counts and dukes who ruled from the hill. Pick the Palais if cells, dungeons and old courtrooms appeal more; it is the cheaper ticket, a shorter visit, and it sits at the end of the walk, so you are not racing on to another stop afterwards.

Can I visit Annecy Castle on any day of the week?

Not on every day. The castle has a regular closing day and occasional extra ones, so if you only have one day in Annecy, check at the castle before planning around it.

Can I combine this walk with Geneva on the same trip?

Easily. Geneva is only 34 km away, and this route fits into half a day even with both museums, so it pairs well with the Geneva walking tour on a neighbouring day.

Where can I walk next after Annecy?

For mountains, the Chamonix tour and the Megève tour are the closest; for another lake town, try the Lausanne tour.

Is the tour really free?

Yes. The whole tour is free: the route, the interactive map and the navigation cost you nothing. Only the voice AI Tour Guide is optional and paid: you test it with 100 free credits, then you pay either €5 per hour or €19.99 for this whole tour, with no time limit. Admission to 2 of the 5 stops is not included: Annecy Castle and Palais de l'Île charge their own entry fees.

Do I need to download an app?

No. Everything runs in your phone browser. Open the route and start walking, no download and no sign-up required.

Do I need to book the walking tour in advance?

No booking needed. This self-guided tour is available anytime. Open the route in your browser and start walking. The AI Tour Guide works instantly, no app, no reservation required.

What languages is the AI Tour Guide available in?

The AI Tour Guide speaks 13 languages, so you take the tour in your own language and can switch at any time.

Can I skip stops or change the route?

Yes. Skip any stop, spend extra time at places you like, or start the route from any point. It is your walk, you set the pace.
