Your Ascona Walking Tour, from the Piazza to San Materno

  1. 1

    Piazza Giuseppe Motta

Piazza Giuseppe Motta in Ascona, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

You start where Ascona meets the lake. Piazza Giuseppe Motta is a public square and a pedestrian promenade in one, open around the clock with no gate and no ticket. Think of it as the front room of the walk rather than a box to tick: whatever time you arrive, the square is ready for you.

That makes it the one stop you never need to plan around. If you are timing the day for the museums, keep moving now and come back to the waterfront later; the piazza will take whatever time the day leaves over.

Right at the start you also pass the Mercato di Ascona. From the piazza the route turns left into the lanes through Vicolo della Ruga, and after 150 m, about 2 minutes, you reach the first of the two museums.

    Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna

Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Ascona, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

The Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna is the town's own art museum, formerly simply the Museo Comunale. It holds the municipal collection and the estate of Marianne Werefkin, looked after by the Werefkin Foundation, and the building is listed as cultural property of regional importance. Together with Castello San Materno at the end of the walk it forms Ascona's municipal art museums, and both houses share one director, the art historian Mara Folini.

Go in if you care about modern art or want to understand why this small lakeside town has a museum of this kind at all; the Werefkin estate is the reason to come. An hour is enough. It is also the cheaper of the two museums, so if you only have time or budget for one, or the castle is closed, choose this one.

From here it is 340 m, about 6 minutes, to the parish church.

Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo

Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo in Ascona, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo is Ascona's parish church in the historic centre, dedicated to two patron saints, Peter and Paul, and the town's principal place of worship.

Entry is free, but the door follows services and special openings rather than a visitor timetable. Treat getting inside as a welcome chance, not a promise: try the door, and if it is open, slip in quietly and respect any service in progress. If it stays shut, the outside and the square around it are still worth your few minutes.

Now comes the longest leg of the walk: 960 m, about 14 minutes, out to Castello San Materno at the end of the route.

    Museo Castello San Materno

Museo Castello San Materno in Ascona, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

The walk ends at a castle turned museum. Castello San Materno reopened in April 2014 after restoration and has since housed the art collection of the Kurt and Barbara Alten cultural foundation from Solothurn. It belongs to the same municipal museum pair as the Museo Comunale.

The permanent collection is a compact tour of German painting around 1900: the artists' colony of Worpswede with Paula Modersohn-Becker, Otto Modersohn, Fritz Overbeck and Hans am Ende; German Impressionism with Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth; and Expressionists of Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter such as Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Hermann Max Pechstein and Alexej von Jawlensky. Watercolours by Christian Rohlfs, Emil Nolde and August Macke round it off. Since 2016 the castle has also hosted a special exhibition during the summer months.

If you like Expressionism, this is the stop that justifies the whole walk, and the admission is fair for names of this calibre. Plan about an hour inside. Make sure the castle is open on your day, and arrive early enough to enjoy it rather than rush it.

Three Ways to Walk Ascona

The route is short, so the real choice is how many museum doors you go through.

Free outdoor stroll

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4

For anyone on a budget or arriving on a day the museums are shut. You walk all four stops, look at both museums from outside and try the church door. 22 minutes of walking, no admission at all.

Short loop with Werefkin

Stops: 1, 2, 3

For a morning or an hour between other plans. Piazza, the Museo Comunale and the parish church sit close together: 8 minutes of walking in total, and only the Museo Comunale charges admission. You skip the longest leg out to the castle.

Full art walk

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4

For art lovers on a day when both museums are open. All 22 minutes of walking plus two museum visits, with two admissions to pay.

How Long Does This Ascona Tour Take with Both Museums?

Pure walking time is 22 minutes over 1.4 km, and two thirds of the distance comes in the final leg to the castle. The museums set the pace, not the walking. Give each one about an hour and the church a quarter of an hour, and the full route takes a little over two and a half hours.

A schedule that works on a day when both museums are open: start on the piazza at 14:00, reach the Museo Comunale at 14:02 and leave at 15:02, stand in front of the church at 15:08, set off again at 15:23 and arrive at Castello San Materno at 15:37 for an hour inside. The free outdoor stroll takes under an hour with time to look around; the short loop with Werefkin needs about an hour and a half.

Before You Set Off in Ascona

  • Start and finish: The recommended start is Piazza Giuseppe Motta on the lakefront, and the walk ends at Museo Castello San Materno. You can join at any stop; the order here is simply the one that works best.
  • Best day: Plan your day around the museums: neither opens every day, and the castle has fewer opening days than the Museo Comunale. If both are open, take the full route; if not, the outdoor stroll still works.
  • Season: The Museo Comunale runs a season from June 14, 2026 until January 10, 2027, with a break from September 7 until September 19, 2026.
  • Costs: Piazza and church are free. Both museums charge admission; the Museo Comunale offers reductions for AVS pensioners, students and groups, and at Castello San Materno you can ask about reductions at the desk. The GPS route is free; the AI Tour Guide starts with 100 free credits, after that it is €19.99 for this tour with no time limit or €5 per hour.

Walk Ascona with Your Guide in Conversation

On a route this compact, the AI Tour Guide earns its place in the details. It greets you on the piazza, tells the stories behind each stop as you walk, asks what pulls you in, whether that is Werefkin's life, the Worpswede painters or the church itself, and shapes the rest of the walk around your answers. Wondering how a Solothurn couple's collection ended up in a Ticino castle, or what links the Brücke painters to the Blaue Reiter? Ask, interrupt, steer; the GPS route stays the same.

A Real Conversation A voice AI Tour Guide greets you, leads the whole route, and tells the stories and facts as you walk, asking what you want to see and keeping a real conversation going. Not a recording you press play on.
Map Navigation Follow the route on the map and walk at your own pace. You choose where to start and when to move to the next stop.
Ask Anything Curious about a building you pass? Ask your AI Tour Guide on the spot and the conversation carries on.

Common Questions About Walking Ascona

Is Ascona worth combining with another town on the same day?

Yes, the walk is short enough. Bellinzona is 20 km away and pairs well, and across the border Como is 45 km away for a longer day.

Can children and teenagers get into the museums for free?

At the Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna everyone under 18 enters free. At Castello San Materno the listed price is for adults, so ask at the desk about young visitors.

The museums are closed on my day in Ascona. Is the walk still worth it?

Yes, as the free outdoor stroll. The piazza is always open and the church may be open for a service, so you still get the lakefront, the old town and both museum buildings from outside.

Is the Museo Comunale open in winter?

Its current season runs until January 10, 2027. For visits after that date, check the new season before you plan around it.

Is the tour really free?

Yes. The whole tour is free: the route, the interactive map and the navigation cost you nothing. Only the voice AI Tour Guide is optional and paid: you test it with 100 free credits, then you pay either €5 per hour or €19.99 for this whole tour, with no time limit. Admission to 2 of the 4 stops is not included: Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna and Museo Castello San Materno charge their own entry fees.
