The Jūrmala Walking Tour, Stop by Stop along the Coast

  1. 1

    Aspazija House

Aspazija House in Jūrmala, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

Your walk starts in Dubulti, the quiet end of Jūrmala, in a museum on a domestic scale. Aspazija House (Aspazijas māja) is small, free and built around one woman. Its permanent exhibition is called Aspazija atgriežas Dubultos, Aspazija returns to Dubulti, and the title already tells you something: you only return to a place you once knew. What bound her to this neighbourhood is the story the rooms tell, and it is the reason to step inside rather than glance at the house and move on.

Right now the house is also a work site. Since September 2026 the veranda has been under reconstruction, and parts of the permanent exhibition are being reworked around it. The museum has stayed open throughout, so expect a show in transition rather than a closed door. On your own, half an hour is enough; groups of up to 15 people can book a guided tour in Latvian or a foreign language.

Mind the calendar: the house is not open every day, and its hours change with the season. If the door is locked when you arrive, don't rebuild your day around it.

The longest leg of the walk follows: 1300 m, about 18 minutes, from Dubulti to Jomas iela in Majori.

    Jomas iela

Jomas iela in Jūrmala, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

Jomas iela is Jūrmala's main pedestrian street, and you feel the change as soon as you reach it in Majori: cobbles underfoot, restaurants and shops on both sides, villas and summer houses between them. The whole street runs 1900 metres, but only 1100 m of it is cobbled and car-free, from Lienes iela onward; the rest carries four lanes of traffic. It became a pedestrian street in 1987.

The name comes from the landscape. Jomas were hollows running parallel to the sand dunes, and about 160 years ago they stretched across the area of Jomas, Jūras and Lienes streets. The town grew into them: Majori's first shop, market and pharmacy opened on this street at the end of the 19th century.

Look out for Horn's Garden (Horna dārzs), counted as the first built-up plot on Jomas iela. In 1905 it hosted the first concert of Latvian symphonic music, and today the Jūrmala Culture Centre sits there. At the end of the street stands a two-metre globe made of copper plates, the largest globe in Latvia, and the city council has its address at Jomas iela 1.

Majori railway station lies near the junction with Lienes iela, with trains toward Riga and Tukums, which makes this the natural place to join if you come by rail. Give the street a slow half hour. The Jūrmala City Museum is a short hop away: 320 m, four minutes.

    Jūrmala City Museum

Jūrmala City Museum, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

The Jūrmala City Museum is the second free interior of the day: permanent exhibitions plus temporary art shows, no entry price, no ticket logic. Since the temporary shows are what change between visits, they deserve most of your attention; plan around 45 minutes.

Its calendar is the stricter of the two museums, with fewer opening days, so if you want both museums in one day, plan around this one.

Two extras cost money: the audioguide, which is free for students, seniors and visitors with disabilities, and guided tours in Latvian or a foreign language for groups of up to 15 people. On a first visit you can skip both: the building already costs nothing, and the rooms are easy to take in on your own.

From here the town lets go of you street by street. Majori Beach is 690 m away, about nine minutes on foot.

    Majori Beach

Majori Beach in Jūrmala, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

Then you're on sand. Majori Beach is public and free, open around the clock, with a lit promenade alongside. On this route it plays the destination: after two museums and a boulevard, everything before it starts to look like the approach, and the shoreline is the point.

Treat it as the long break of the day. This is the last stop that exists purely for stopping, so sit down, walk along the water, let the morning settle. Because the sand never closes and the promenade is lit, the beach suits a late visit as well as a midday one.

When you are ready, the second-longest leg follows: 1100 m, about 15 minutes, out to the Dzintari Concert Hall.

    Dzintari Concert Hall

Dzintari Concert Hall in Jūrmala, stop 5 on the self-guided walking tour

The Dzintari Concert Hall (Dzintaru koncertzāle) is a listed concert house with two halls, and the sea is only about 100 metres away. The older Small Hall covers 415 m² with up to 550 seats and a 92 m² stage. The Great Hall is the striking one: a roof without walls, open to the air, with 2110 seats and 300 standing places, in use from June to September. A dining area adds 70 more seats.

The hall answers an old problem. Concerts became part of resort life here in the 19th century, and in 1897 a first stage went up in Edinburg, where well-known artists performed. After a pause for the First World War the concerts resumed, but without a weatherproof venue every rainy summer hurt; the 1935 season brought heavy losses. On 25 July 1936 the new hall by Victor Mellenberg and Alexander Birzenieks opened, and in the summer of 1937 it counted 30,000 visitors.

The Second World War stopped the music again, but it came back. In 1962 the architect Modris Ģelzis added the open Great Hall, and Dzintari became one of the most popular concert halls in the Soviet Union. Each season ran from June to August, with Latvian players joined by orchestras from Moscow, Leningrad and other cities, and soloists such as Gidon Kremer, Lazar Berman, Vladimir Spivakov and Alexei Lubimov.

Inside, the halls open only during events. The ticket office and info centre are free to enter; ticket prices depend on the programme. Groups with a real interest in music can book a guided tour in advance. For most walkers, the building from outside and a look at the programme are enough.

The last leg is short: 490 m, about seven minutes, to Dzintari Forest Park.

    Dzintari Forest Park

Dzintari Forest Park in Jūrmala, stop 6 on the self-guided walking tour

The route ends under trees. Dzintari Forest Park is a maintained park with playgrounds and a skatepark, and it saves the last free thing for last: the viewing tower, which charges nothing to lift you above the town you have just walked. After a whole route at ground level, this is the one place that changes your angle.

Carry one correction: the park is not open around the clock, whatever older listings say. Its hours fit almost any version of this walk and only matter on long summer evenings, when the beach part of your day stretches.

The tour finishes here on purpose. This was a one-way line from Dubulti to Dzintari, not a loop, so there is no closing leg and no ground walked twice. From the tower, decide what you want more of: the beach you left, or the concert you only saw from outside.

Shorter Ways to Walk Jūrmala

The line splits neatly into a town half and a sea half, so you can match the walk to the weekday and your energy.

Museums and the boulevard

Stops: 1, 2, 3

For a Wednesday to Saturday with an interest in local history: Aspazija House, Jomas iela and the City Museum. 1620 m and 22 minutes of walking, both interiors free; with visits, about two hours.

Sea, music and trees

Stops: 4, 5, 6

For a day when both museums are closed, or a late start: Majori Beach, the Dzintari Concert Hall and Dzintari Forest Park. 1590 m and 22 minutes of walking; nothing charges entry unless you buy a concert ticket.

Short Majori version

Stops: 2, 3, 4

If you arrive at Majori station with little time: Jomas iela, the City Museum and Majori Beach. 1010 m and 13 minutes of walking, the museum free; an hour and a half is comfortable.

How Long the Jūrmala Tour Takes with Museums and Beach

The pure walking time is 53 min over 3.9 km, and the longest legs sit at the ends: 18 minutes out of Dubulti and 15 minutes from the beach to the concert hall. What stretches the day is stopping: half an hour in Aspazija House, a slow half hour on Jomas iela, 45 minutes in the City Museum, a long break on the sand, a short look at the concert hall and half an hour in the forest park. That comes to about four hours.

A sample day: leave Aspazija House at 10:30, reach Jomas iela at 10:48, the City Museum at 11:22, Majori Beach at 12:16, the Dzintari Concert Hall at 13:16 and Dzintari Forest Park at 13:38. You are done shortly after 14:00. Either half of the line takes 22 minutes of walking, the Majori version 13 minutes.

Before You Set Off in Dubulti

  • Start and finish: Aspazija House in Dubulti is the recommended start, Dzintari Forest Park the end. The line runs one way, with no leg back, and you can join at any stop, Jomas iela included.
  • Best days: Pick a day when both museums are open. Neither opens every day, and the City Museum has the stricter calendar.
  • Time of day: Start in the morning, once both museums have opened. The forest park stays open into the evening, so the end of the walk never rushes you.
  • Costs: The walk and every entry are free. Money only comes in for extras: the City Museum audioguide, booked group tours and concert tickets.

You start with 100 free credits; after that, this tour costs €19.99 all-inclusive with no time limit, or you pay €5 per hour.

A Real Conversation A voice AI Tour Guide greets you, leads the whole route, and tells the stories and facts as you walk, asking what you want to see and keeping a real conversation going. Not a recording you press play on.

Common Questions about Walking Jūrmala

Does the walk work in the evening?

Partly. Jomas iela and Majori Beach are open around the clock, and the promenade is lit. The museums and the concert hall box office close earlier in the day, except on event days, while the forest park stays open into the evening. A late walk is the outdoor version.

Can I combine Jūrmala with Riga on the same day?

Yes. Riga is 19 km away, and trains from Majori station run toward Riga, so a morning on this walk and an afternoon in the capital fit together.

Where should I start if I arrive by train at Majori?

Majori station lies near Jomas iela, so start there, take the line to the forest park, and walk out to Aspazija House another time or skip it.

Is the tour really free?

Yes. The whole tour is free: the route, the interactive map and the navigation cost you nothing. Only the voice AI Tour Guide is optional and paid: you test it with 100 free credits, then you pay either €5 per hour or €19.99 for this whole tour, with no time limit.
