Plaza de los Ponchos
Start where Otavalo does its business. Plaza de los Ponchos, also called Plaza Centenario, is an open public square filled with artisan stalls, and it is both the front door of this walk and its biggest single draw. The square itself has no gate; the stalls keep daytime hours, so this is a stop for the morning or afternoon.
Your one real decision here is which day you are standing in Otavalo. Saturday is the peak: the market at its largest and the square at its fullest, and those two things come together, not separately. A weekday morning gives you a smaller, calmer version of the same market, with room to stop, look properly and talk to the sellers without being swept along. Chase the full spectacle and you take the crowd with it; chase calm and you accept fewer stalls. Neither choice is wrong, but make it on purpose.
Take your time walking the rows before you buy, and sort out your money here. This is the only stop on the route with any claim on your wallet; everything after it is free, all the way to the top of the hill. The other three stops are quieter by design, so enjoy the noise while you have it.
When you are done, the next stop is only 80 m away, a minute on foot: Santuario de San Luis.
