Your Salento Walking Tour, One Place at a Time

  1. 1

    Plaza de Bolívar

Plaza de Bolívar in Salento, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

Start where the town starts. Plaza de Bolívar is Salento's central historic square, an open public space with no gate and no ticket, the place where the town gathers. Take a moment to look around before you walk off, because you are standing at your finish line too: the parish church that closes the walk stands on this very square.

That is how the route is built. It leaves the plaza along Calle Real, climbs to the viewpoint on the hill above town and comes back down to the church, so the square is your anchor each time you return to it. Don't spend too long here at the start. The plaza is the frame of the tour; the street and the hilltop carry the substance, and you will see the square again at the end with much more context.

Get your bearings, then head for Calle Real, which begins right off the plaza: barely 100 meters, about a minute on foot.

    Calle Real

Calle Real in Salento, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

Calle Real is the stretch of Carrera 6 running up from the plaza, and it is Salento's showcase: a colonial heritage pedestrian street lined with colorful traditional bahareque houses. Their ground floors now hold handicraft shops and cafes. Of the four stops, this is the one that feels like a destination in its own right; the others are architecture or view, while this is where the town actually does business.

The facades are the attraction, so walk slowly and give them your attention. House after house in bright colors: until you reach the viewpoint, this is the most purely visual part of the walk, and it needs no ticket and no explanation to work.

Decide early whether this is a shopping stop or a strolling stop. The street never closes, but every shop and cafe keeps its own hours, so the same walk feels quite different depending on when you come. If handicrafts are on your list, come while the shutters are up; if not, the houses alone are reason enough.

At the end of Calle Real the hill begins. The Mirador Alto de la Cruz sits above it, 360 meters and about 6 minutes of walking away, most of it uphill.

    Mirador Alto de la Cruz

Mirador Alto de la Cruz in Salento, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

Mirador Alto de la Cruz sits on the hill above the end of Calle Real. The classic way up is the Vía Crucis, a path with the stations of the cross, and on a first visit it is the one to take: the stations give the climb a rhythm that a plain road walk cannot. If that is not for you today, Carrera 4 leads up by road.

The reward at the top is a panoramic view over the town you have just walked through. This is a public municipal viewpoint with an ecological trail, permanently open, with no desk and no fee. From up here the route stops being a series of corners and turns into a shape: the plaza, the line of Calle Real, the rooftops around them.

Give the summit more time than seems necessary. It is the stop that changes how you see the other three, and the one that took the most effort to reach.

When you are ready, head back down: 550 meters and about 8 minutes take you to the plaza, where the church closes the loop.

    Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen

Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen in Salento, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

The last stop brings you back to where you began. Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen is the parish church standing on Plaza de Bolívar, Salento's main Catholic church, under the Diócesis de Armenia.

After a square, a street and a hilltop, a roof over your head is a change of pace in itself, and the interior makes a quiet contrast to everything you have seen so far. Go in if the door is open; entry is free and there is nothing to figure out beforehand.

That closes the loop. You are back on the plaza with a colorful street, a climb and a view behind you, and you have not paid admission anywhere along the way. If the church happens to be shut, the walk loses little: the view from the hill was the high point, and it was free too.

Stops: 1, 2, 3

For anyone who mainly wants the panorama. From the plaza along Calle Real and up to the mirador, 7 min of walking; the GPS navigation leads you back to the start whenever you are ready. All free.

Just the square

Stops: 1, 4

How Long Does This Salento Tour Take With the Climb?

The pure walking time is 15 minutes over 1.0 km: 1 minute from the plaza to Calle Real, 6 minutes up to the viewpoint and 8 minutes back down to the church. The rest of your time goes to looking.

Realistically you need about an hour: a few minutes on the square, a slow quarter of an hour along Calle Real, around twenty minutes at the top and ten inside the church. If you shop or sit in a cafe on Calle Real, add as much as you like. The street and view version takes roughly 45 minutes before you head back; the square on its own is done in a quarter of an hour.

Before You Start Your Salento Walk

  • Start: Plaza de Bolívar is the recommended start, but you can join the route at any stop.
  • Finish: Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen, which stands on the same square where you began.
  • Best time: During the day, when the shops and cafes on Calle Real are open and the church door is likely to be open too.
  • Admission: None of the four stops charges admission; at the church, donations are voluntary.
