Museo Paleontológico de Villa De Leyva
This is the scientific heart of the walk. The Museo Paleontológico belongs to the museums of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and is attached to its Faculty of Sciences in Bogotá. It works as a place of research, teaching and outreach, and its focus is the region you are standing in: the Villa de Leyva area counts among the places of greatest geological and paleontological interest in the world, rich in fossils.
The displays reconstruct how this landscape came to be. Look for the invertebrates first: gastropods, bivalves, sea urchins and crinoids, the feathery relatives of starfish. Then the vertebrates, bony fish and marine reptiles, all found in this area. Standing among them, it sinks in that this highland valley was once sea floor.
Outside, the museum opened the first interactive paleontological garden in Colombia. Its 87 plant species mark the path, and you can explore them through augmented reality. They grow locally, regionally and across the country; many are native and some are endangered. Children and anyone who likes to touch and test things will get the most out of it.
The museum charges admission, with a higher rate for foreign visitors. Give it about an hour, garden included. The final leg to the Ricaurte house is the shortest of the day: 1140 m, about 14 minutes.
