Your Arnhem Walking Tour, from Markt Square to the Rhine and Back

  1. 1

    Markt Square

Markt Square in Arnhem, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

Markt Square, known locally as the Grote Markt, is a big open square and one of the oldest parts of Arnhem. Around it stand several of the city's best-known buildings: the Huis der Provincie, the Eusebius Church, the Paleis van Justitie and the Waag, the old weigh house. A few restaurants and cafés line the square, which makes it an easy place to meet before setting off.

Take a moment to get your bearings here, because you will be back at the end: the river lies within walking distance through the Sabelspoort, and that is the way the loop returns. For now, the Eusebius Church is just 70 m away, a one-minute walk across the square.

    Eusebius Church

Eusebius Church in Arnhem, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

The Eusebius Church, also called the Grote Kerk, is the largest and most important Protestant church in Arnhem. It belonged to the Catholic Church until the iconoclasm that swept through Arnhem in 1578 and 1579.

Its real story is 1944. During the Battle of Arnhem the church stood right in the line of fire and was almost completely destroyed; only the shot-up tower still rose above the ruins of the city. It was rebuilt in a sweeping restoration from 1947 to 1964 and has been seen ever since as a national icon of the Dutch postwar reconstruction.

Is it worth the ticket? If the war and the rebuilding are why you came to Arnhem, this is the interior to pay for; give it around 45 minutes. On a tight budget, the exterior and the tower already tell the story of destruction and recovery, and you lose little by walking on.

From the church it is 250 m, about three minutes, to the Sint-Walburgis Basilica, which is older still.

    Sint-Walburgis Basilica

Sint-Walburgis Basilica in Arnhem, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

The Sint-Walburgis Basilica is the oldest church still standing in Arnhem. You recognise it by its twin-tower front on the west side. It was built on the Grafelijke Hof, the site of the count's court and the residence of Reinald I.

The building is no longer used as a church, so this is a stop for the outside only: stand back far enough to take in the two towers and imagine the count's residence that once occupied this ground. Five minutes is plenty.

Next comes a 680 m walk, about nine minutes, to Jansplein, a square that is named after a church which no longer exists.

    Jansplein

Jansplein in Arnhem, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

Jansplein takes its name from the Sint-Janskerk, which stood on this spot. The church was built around 1200 and enlarged in 1425 after a fire; by about 1817 it was in such poor shape that it was pulled down. In 1838 the Koepelkerk opened on the same site.

Today the square is known for its bars and restaurants. Look out for the former post office, designed by the state architect Cornelis Peters and completed in 1889. The Janspoort, one of the old gates, once stood nearby on Jansstraat, and on the north side of the square a passage leads through to the Gele Rijders Plein.

From here the route leaves the old centre: 960 m, about 14 minutes, to the Netherlands Water Museum.

    Netherlands Water Museum

Netherlands Water Museum in Arnhem, stop 5 on the self-guided walking tour

The Netherlands Water Museum sits in the Bagijnemolen, an old water mill from the 16th and 17th centuries in the listed Sonsbeek park. The mill stands on the Sint-Jansbeek, the stream where Arnhem began, so this is where the city's story literally starts.

The museum opened in 2004 and covers every aspect of fresh water: water management, drinking water and water treatment. It grew out of an idea from 1998 to give the regional water board an information centre in the old mill.

It is a good stop for families and for anyone curious about how a country so shaped by water keeps it under control; plan about an hour.

The walk on to Museum Arnhem is 1060 m, about 16 minutes.

    Museum Arnhem

Museum Arnhem, stop 6 on the self-guided walking tour

Museum Arnhem, formerly the Gemeentemuseum Arnhem and the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem, was founded in 1856. Since 1920 it has occupied a former gentlemen's club building designed by the Dutch architect Cornelis Outshoorn.

The collection covers modern and contemporary art, applied art and design, with the emphasis on the 20th century. If that is your field, give it an hour and a quarter; children get in free, which makes it easy to bring them along.

Then comes the longest leg of the loop: 1950 m, about 26 minutes, down to the river and the Airborne at the Bridge Information Centre.

Airborne at the Bridge Information Centre

The Airborne at the Bridge Information Centre is the Arnhem branch of the Airborne Museum Hartenstein and is dedicated to the events of September 1944. It is currently closed, so do not plan a visit inside; treat it as the point where the walk turns to the battle.

From here it is 730 m, about ten minutes, to the John Frost Bridge itself.

    John Frost Bridge

John Frost Bridge in Arnhem, stop 8 on the self-guided walking tour

The John Frost Bridge is a road bridge over the Nederrijn, opened in 1935. It was originally called the Rijnbrug, and many locals still call it the Oude Brug, the old bridge.

From 17 to 25 September 1944 Allied airborne troops landed and fought here as part of Operation Market Garden, and this bridge was at the heart of it. It was later named after the British lieutenant colonel John Dutton Frost, and it has become a place of pilgrimage for veterans, their families and anyone drawn to the history of the Battle of Arnhem.

There is nothing to pay and no opening hours. Take a quarter of an hour to stand on it and look back at the town you have just walked through, with the church tower that survived the battle.

The way back into the old centre is 900 m, about 13 minutes, to the Sabelspoort.

    Sabelspoort

Sabelspoort in Arnhem, stop 9 on the self-guided walking tour

The Sabelspoort, also called the Eusebiuspoort, was first mentioned in 1357 and is the one city gate you see on this walk; Arnhem once had four. It was part of a castle surrounded by a high wall with loopholes. Later it served as a lock-up for prisoners and the insane, which earned it the nickname Geckenpoort, the fools' gate. In 1642 it was restored and given a Renaissance facade on the town side.

Over the centuries houses closed in around the gate, until the Battle of Arnhem damaged them so badly that they were demolished after the liberation, leaving the gate standing free. The gate itself was heavily damaged too and was rebuilt in 1952; since then it has been part of the Provinciehuis of Gelderland next to it.

Walk through it and Markt Square is just 100 m away, about a minute, closing the loop where you started.

Shorter ways to walk Arnhem

Not everyone has a full day. These three cuts follow the same order as the full loop, so the GPS route still works for each of them.

Old town in under 15 minutes of walking

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4

For a first hour in Arnhem: Markt Square, the Eusebius Church, the Sint-Walburgis Basilica and Jansplein, 13 minutes on foot in total. The only ticket on the way is the Eusebius Church, and you can just as well take it in from outside.

The 1944 thread along the river

Stops: 7, 8, 9, 1, 2

For anyone here because of the Battle of Arnhem: begin outside the Airborne at the Bridge Information Centre, walk to the John Frost Bridge, back through the Sabelspoort to Markt Square and finish at the Eusebius Church. That is 25 minutes of walking; add the church ticket if you want to see the rebuilt interior.

Water and art for a museum afternoon

Stops: 4, 5, 6

For a slower day indoors: from Jansplein to the Netherlands Water Museum and on to Museum Arnhem, 30 minutes on foot. Both museums charge admission.

How Long Does the Arnhem Loop Take on Foot?

The 6.7 km come to 1 h 33 min of pure walking. The longest leg, 26 minutes, runs from Museum Arnhem to the river; everything in the old town lies within a few minutes of everything else.

If you look at every stop from outside and pause briefly at each, the loop takes about two hours. Add around 45 minutes in the Eusebius Church, an hour in the Netherlands Water Museum and an hour and a quarter in Museum Arnhem, and you are at roughly five and a half hours: start on Markt Square at 10:00 and you are back there around 15:30, before any lunch break you add.

The old-town cut fits into half an hour with a look around, the 1944 thread into about an hour, or more with the church interior. The water and art variant fills a whole afternoon because of the two museums.

Before you set off from Markt Square

  • Start and finish: The recommended start is Markt Square, and the loop brings you back to it via the Sabelspoort. You can join at any stop; the order shown is simply the one that works best on foot.
  • Best day: If you want to go inside the museums, pick a day when the Netherlands Water Museum and Museum Arnhem are both open.
  • Time of day: Start in the morning, once the Eusebius Church and the Netherlands Water Museum have opened. Museum Arnhem opens later, but you reach it after midday anyway.
  • Costs: Walking the route is free. The Eusebius Church, the Netherlands Water Museum and Museum Arnhem charge admission, with reduced prices for young visitors and free entry for small children.

What the AI Tour Guide adds between church, museum and bridge

On this loop the stories hang together: the same September 1944 runs through the bridge, the shattered church and the gate that was dug out of the rubble. The AI Tour Guide leads you through that as a conversation: it greets you, tells you what happened where you stand, asks what you would like to hear more about and remembers it, so a war history buff hears more about the bridge and an art lover more about the museum. You can cut in whenever you like, for instance to ask what life inside the Sabelspoort was like for the people locked up there. You start with 100 free credits; after that you pick either this tour all-inclusive for €19.99 with no time limit, or €5 per hour.

A Real Conversation A voice AI Tour Guide greets you, leads the whole route, and tells the stories and facts as you walk, asking what you want to see and keeping a real conversation going. Not a recording you press play on.
Map Navigation Follow the route on the map and walk at your own pace. You choose where to start and when to move to the next stop.
