Free Walking Tour Appenzell: Village Loop from the Square

In Appenzell a whole canton still votes in the open air, and this loop starts on that very square. Two kilometres later you have seen castle, town hall, art and church.

The Appenzell Walking Tour Stop by Stop, from Square to Church

  1. 1

    Landsgemeindeplatz

Landsgemeindeplatz in Appenzell, stop 1 on the self-guided walking tour

This is where you begin, on the open public square at the heart of the village. It is accessible at any hour, costs nothing and needs no booking. For most of the year it simply works as the middle of Appenzell, a place people cross on their way somewhere else.

The name tells you its real job. Once a year the square becomes the venue of the Landsgemeinde, the annual open-air assembly of Appenzell Innerrhoden, where the canton decides things together in public. Keep that idea with you on the walk: a community that votes on a square still keeps a castle private, seats its council behind a painted facade and fills a church with centuries of history. Each of those stops answers the square in its own way.

From here the route turns into the lanes, along Hauptgasse, and after 190 m, about 3 minutes, reaches Museum Appenzell.

    Museum Appenzell

Museum Appenzell, stop 2 on the self-guided walking tour

The museum hides in plain sight. It occupies the upper floors of the town hall building, above the rooms where the Great Council of the canton meets, so a visit means walking into the seat of government to look at the village's past. When you later stand in front of the painted Rathaus facade, you will know what lies behind it.

Go in if you have an hour and want the inside view rather than just the streets. The museum charges admission, while children with an adult enter free. Timing matters more here than anywhere else on the loop, because the hours change with the weekday and the season, so check them before you set off.

A short 120 m, about 2 minutes, brings you to Schloss Appenzell.

    Hours
    Apr–Oct: Tue–Fri 10:00–12:00 and 13:30–17:00, Sat–Sun & holidays 11:00–17:00, Mon closed; Nov–Mar: Tue–Sun & holidays 14:00–17:00, Mon closed
    Price

  3. 3

    Schloss Appenzell

Schloss Appenzell, stop 3 on the self-guided walking tour

Schloss Appenzell is one of the few stone buildings in the village that date from the 16th century, which is exactly why it stands out among its neighbours. It is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

It is also a private residence, and the interior is not open to the public. You see it from outside, at any time and for free, and a few minutes are enough. Here the theme from the square comes back: the canton that settles its affairs in the open has a castle whose doors stay closed.

From the castle the route leaves the core for the art houses: 340 m, about 5 minutes, to Kunstmuseum Appenzell.

    Hours
Exterior view accessible at all times; interior not open to the public (private residence)
  4. 4

    Kunstmuseum Appenzell

Kunstmuseum Appenzell, stop 4 on the self-guided walking tour

Kunstmuseum Appenzell, once known as Museum Liner, shows art of the 20th and 21st centuries in changing special exhibitions, alongside shows drawn from its own collection. It is a deliberate change of key after the castle: from 16th century stone to contemporary art.

It is worth going in if modern art is your thing; if not, the building from outside is enough and you keep walking. The ticket is a combined one that also covers Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte, so if you plan both, buy it here.

The walk to the sister house is 510 m, about 8 minutes.

    Hours
    Wed–Fri 12:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 11:00–17:00, Mon–Tue closed (first Thursday of the month 12:00–20:00, free admission after 18:00)
    Price
CHF 15.00 regular, CHF 10.00 reduced (combined ticket with Kunsthalle)
  5. 5

    Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte

Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte in Appenzell, stop 5 on the self-guided walking tour

Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte, today also called Kunsthalle Appenzell, is the second house of the Heinrich Gebert Kulturstiftung Appenzell, the same foundation behind Kunstmuseum Appenzell. It is more than an exhibition space: besides contemporary art, it runs a concert programme of twelve concerts and three matinees with young musicians, devoted to classical music and how it carries on in music written today.

Your combined ticket from the Kunstmuseum gets you in, with the same opening days. In the older rooms of the building there is also a small library and an open space that children and adults can use on their own, free of charge, which makes it a good stop for families even without a ticket.

From here the route heads back into the centre, 660 m and about 8 minutes, to Appenzell Town Hall (Rathaus).

    Hours
    Wed–Fri 12:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 11:00–17:00, Mon–Tue closed (first Thursday of the month 12:00–20:00, free admission after 18:00)
    Price
CHF 15.00 regular, CHF 10.00 reduced (combined ticket with Kunstmuseum)
  6. 6

    Appenzell Town Hall (Rathaus)

Appenzell Town Hall (Rathaus), stop 6 on the self-guided walking tour

Back in the centre, the outside is the whole show. The facade paintings by August Schmid date from 1928 and give this working government building its public face, so take a moment to look at them properly.

Behind the paintings, the Great Council of the canton meets, and Museum Appenzell fills the floors above. A council indoors and an assembly on the square, a few lanes apart and both still in use: that is the pairing the loop has been building towards. For most visitors this stop is complete from the street.

St. Maurice Church is just 70 m away, about a minute's walk.

  7. 7

    St. Maurice Church

St. Maurice Church in Appenzell, stop 7 on the self-guided walking tour

The parish church, locally Pfarrkirche St. Mauritius, is dedicated to Saint Maurice, patron saint of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. The first building on this site went up around 1068 or 1069, and the church has been enlarged or rebuilt several times since. Its present outward look comes from the neoclassical nave built in 1824 and 1825, while the choir and tower of the late Gothic church survived intact.

Go inside: it is open daily during the daytime and entry is free. The interior keeps the neo-rococo redesign carried out between 1890 and 1892, which the renovation of 2018 and 2019 largely preserved. Look for the high altar from 1622; most of the other furnishings date from the middle and late 19th century. The parish once covered the whole inner part of today's canton and much of Gais, before new parishes split off, and its size still hints at that larger role.

To close the circle, walk 250 m, about 4 minutes, back to Landsgemeindeplatz, where the walk started.

Three Ways to Walk the Loop

Every version follows the same 30 minute circuit. What changes is how many doors you open along the way.

Free village loop

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

For a first look, a short visit or a Monday, when all three museums are shut. You walk the whole circuit, see the museums from outside and go into St. Maurice Church only. 30 minutes of walking, about an hour and a quarter in total, no tickets.

Village history

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

For anyone curious about how the canton governs itself. You go into Museum Appenzell and the parish church and pass the two art houses from outside. 30 minutes of walking, about two hours in total, one museum ticket.

Art and village

Stops: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

For art lovers on a Wednesday to Sunday. You skip Museum Appenzell and spend your time in Kunstmuseum Appenzell and Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte on the combined ticket, plus the church. 30 minutes of walking, about three hours in total.

How Long the Appenzell Tour Takes, With and Without Museums

The loop is short: 2.1 km and 30 minutes of pure walking, with the longest legs being the walk out to the two art houses and the walk back into the centre. The time goes into the interiors. If you do everything, a weekend day works neatly: start on Landsgemeindeplatz at 11:00, spend an hour in Museum Appenzell from 11:03, reach the castle at 12:05, enter Kunstmuseum Appenzell at 12:20, move on to Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte at 13:28, stand in front of the Rathaus at 14:21, step into St. Maurice Church at 14:27 and be back on the square at 14:46.

On a weekday a later start lines everything up better: begin at 13:30 and you are in the museum from 13:33, at the castle at 14:35, at Kunstmuseum Appenzell at 14:50 and at Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte by 15:58. If Museum Appenzell is not yet open when you set off, begin at Kunstmuseum Appenzell and leave the village museum for the end of the circuit.

Before You Set Off in Appenzell

  • Start and finish: Landsgemeindeplatz is the recommended start, and the loop brings you back there. You can join at any stop and follow the circle from there.

Walking Appenzell with the AI Tour Guide

Appenzell packs a lot of politics into a few lanes: an open-air assembly, a council chamber, a private castle, a church that served a far bigger parish than today. The AI Tour Guide greets you on Landsgemeindeplatz and follows that thread as you walk, telling the stories of each place, asking what catches your interest and adjusting as it goes. Curious how the Landsgemeinde actually runs on the day, or what it means that the parish once reached into Gais? Just ask, interrupt whenever you like, and the conversation picks up from there.

A Real Conversation A voice AI Tour Guide greets you, leads the whole route, and tells the stories and facts as you walk, asking what you want to see and keeping a real conversation going. Not a recording you press play on.
Map Navigation Follow the route on the map and walk at your own pace. You choose where to start and when to move to the next stop.

Common Questions about Visiting Appenzell

Do museum passes or guest cards work at Museum Appenzell?

Yes. The Swiss Museum Pass and several regional guest cards give you free entry, so bring yours to the ticket desk.

Is there a cheaper way into the art houses?

Yes: the combined ticket covers both Kunstmuseum Appenzell and Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte, so if you plan to see both, buy it at the first house you visit.

Can I see inside the Rathaus?

The interior of the town hall can be visited by appointment. Without one, the painted facade is what you see from the street.

What can I combine with Appenzell on the same day?

Is the tour really free?

Yes. The whole tour is free: the route, the interactive map and the navigation cost you nothing. Only the voice AI Tour Guide is optional and paid: you test it with 100 free credits, then you pay either €5 per hour or €19.99 for this whole tour, with no time limit. Admission to 3 of the 7 stops is not included: Museum Appenzell, Kunstmuseum Appenzell and Kunsthalle Ziegelhütte charge their own entry fees.
